Description

1 971 NEW ZEALAND PATENTS ACT 1953 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION AFTER PROVISIONAL NO: 197193 DATED: 25 May 1981 IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO HORSESHOES WE, HELVETIA INDUSTRIES LIMITED, a New Zealand company of Victoria Street, Waihi, New Zealand do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: 19? y This invention relates to horseshoes and in particular a lightweight shoe suitable for race horses.
Lightweight horseshoes are known, formed from aluminium or an aluminium alloy extruded in a required conventional cross-sectional 5 configuration. Owing to the softness of the metal the shoes wear more quickly than traditional steel shoes a critical wear region being the toe section. It is known to embed a thin metal strip within the body of an aluminium shoe at the toe section thereof to provide additional strength and wear resistant capabilities. Particularly with the wearing 10 away of the surrounding body material the strips can become dislodged and thus a hazard owing to their thin sharp characteristic. The intention of this invention is to provide a horseshoe formed from a soft extruded metal incorporating a strengthening insert which will at least provide the public with a useful choice.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a horseshoe formed from a length of extruded metal of a substantially conventional fullered and channelled cross-sectional configuration including apertures extending through the shoe from the bed of the channel to accommodate fixing slugs characterised in that an elongate wearing plug is mounted 20 thereto as to fill a toe portion of the channel.
According to a second aspect of this invention there is provided a horseshoe as described in the preceding paragraph wherein the plug incorporates projections mounted in apertures formed through the shoe from the bottom of the channel, the free ends of the projections being swaged 1 9 7 1 to the body of the shoe.
In further describing the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is an underside plan view, and A horseshoe 10 is formed from a length of aluminium alloy material. Alternatively a plastics material may be suitable. The material is generated by an extrusion moulding process to have a substantially hunter 10 shoe cross-sectional configuration. More particularly, along one longitudinal corner edge 12 the material is fullered to achieve better grip. Referring to Figure 1 on the fullered face, being the underside in use, a longitudinal channel 14 is also formed and in the bottom of which a conventional array of slug accommodating apertures 16 are formed 15 through the shoe.
The shoe is shaped to either a conventional fore or hind shoe configuration and the ends 26 preferably pencilled.
An elongate essentially hard metal, for example steel, plug 18 is assembled as an insert to the shoe 10. The plug 18 is dimensioned to 20 fill the void of the toe section 20 of the channel 14 to thus provide increased strength wearing capability in that region. Thus the plug 18 is of reasonable bulk and is suitably shaped to avoid having any sharp and thus hazardous edges.
Figure 2 is an upper side view, and Figure 3 is a sectional view on Line A-A on Figure 2. 1 97 Preferably the plug 18 insert is retained to the body of the shoe 10 by incorporation of a pair of projections 22 on one longitudinal face thereof. Referring to Figure 2, the projections 22 locate through apertures 16 formed through the shoe 10 from the bottom of the channel 14. The ends 24 of the projections 22 are preferably swaged over the main body of the shoe 10 to thus retain the plug 18 in position. Thus even with wearing away of the underside region of the shoe 10 the swaged end 24 retaining means is not affected and thus the possibilty of dislodgement of the plug 18 is minimal. / 97/13

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A horseshoe of a substantially conventional fullered and channelled cross-sectional configuration, including apertures extending through the shoe from the channel bed to accommodate fixing slugs characterised in that an elongate wearing plug is mounted thereto as to fill an elongate 5 toe portion of the channel.
2. A horseshoe as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the plug incorporates projections mounted in apertures formed through the shoe from the channel bed, the free ends of the projections being swaged to the body of the shoe. 10
3. A horseshoe as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the shoe has a substantially hunter shoe cross-sectional configuration and is shaped to either a conventional fore or hind shoe configuration with the ends pencilled.
4. A horseshoe as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein 15 the plug is formed from a hard material and is suitably shaped to avoid having sharp edges.
5. A horseshoe as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the shoe is formed from aluminium alloy.
