Abstract

A catheter (4) for introducing a delivery element (8) such as a guide wire (102) with an implantation device (104) coupled thereto via an electrolytic disintegratable connection (106) connected to the anode of a power source (170) which has an anode and a cathode. The catheter (4) comprises an elongated tubular member (10, 12) having an outer surface, proximal and closed end portion, a cavity (14) passing between these portions, an electrode (6) and a conductor (16). The electrode (6) is located within the outer surface of the tubular member (10, 12) near the distal end portion and has a surface facing and communicating with the cavity (14). The electrode (6) is electrically connected to the conductor (16) which in turn is adapted to connect to the cathode of the power source (170) so that when the electrolytically disintegratable connection (106) is inserted into an electrolytic solution, as can be found in FIG. If an aneurysm and positive current is supplied from the power source (170) to the connection (106), current from the connection (106) can return to the cathode of the power source (170) via the electrode (6). With this construction, the electrode (6) is shielded from structures in the cavity (14) which could otherwise increase the resistance in the flow path from the sacrificial connection (106) to the electrode (6). The positioning of the electrode (6) in the catheter (4) as described above allows for a reproducible impedance path from the electrode (6) to the detachment zone, thus reducing the variations in detachment time.
