Abstract

The chlorine or halide content of a chlorinated hydrocarbon or halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon in an environment where air and moisture can be found can be reduced by contacting the chlorinated hydrocarbon or halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon with a reagent comprising (i. ) a complex of a substantially non-toxic metal having at least two oxidation states and (ii) a reducing agent which reductively passes the complex from the second oxidation step of the complex to the first oxidation step. A representative embodiment comprises bis- (r75-cyclopentadienyl) -titanium dichloride and sodium tetrahydride borate. Optionally, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an aliphatic or aromatic amine, optionally in the presence of an inert organic solvent.
