Abstract

The locating and setting tool (70) includes a casing collar locator (72) and a gasket set assembly (74). The casing collar locator (72) contains a detection device that detects the actual locations of casing collars along the casing string (50). The inserting tool contains an engine (134) and an associated linear drive section (140) which will operate an attached retrievable gasket assembly (200) to place the gasket assembly (200) at a desired point in the wellbore. A method is described in which a planned set point within a lined wellbore is established based on recorded well logs and customer requirements. The planned set point is established at a point in the casing string (50) where no joints are recorded (62). A gasket assembly (200) is provided in the wellbore using a locating and setting tool (70) to a point near the scheduled set point in accordance with physical measurements of the running arrangement via manipulation of the casing collar location around the scheduled set point as detected by casing collar locator. The detected depths of the casing collars are then compared with the recorded collar depths. If there is any discrepancy between the detected and recorded collar depths, the customer can be informed and warned that setting the gasket in the planned set point may result in setting in a joint. The adjusted set point is located in a section of the well where no casing joints are located, which could prevent the barrier element from establishing or maintaining a fluid seal when set.
