Description
Thickening of liquids is of technical importance in order to be able to control their flow properties, as well as when liquids are, for example, used as a storage or transport medium for active substances to avoid loss of active substance through some of the liquid flowing away, to keep sedimentable particles in a homogeneous mixture in the liquid, to fix liquids to surfaces so that long-term effects are achieved, or to improve the liquids' conditions as hydrostatic media for pressure distribution, for example through the reduction or exclusion of wave propagation.
Water is excellent as a liquid medium because it is non-toxic, has solubility, miscibility, low cost and good availability. On the other hand, it is often a disadvantage for technical applications that water flows quickly and uncontrolled, that only thin water films adhere to surfaces, contained solids sediment quickly and that wave propagation is strong. This is the case when water is used as an extinguishing agent and as a liquid carrier for cleaning agents or pesticides, but also when its very good pressure distribution effects are utilized.
Kirk-Othmer, "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology", 3. utg., vol. 18, s. 623). Production of thickened water to meet the aforementioned technical requirements, especially in a lasting and controllable way, and to avoid that the beneficial properties deteriorate when small amounts of auxiliaries are added, will often be a requirement. In this connection, various technical solutions have been assessed to take account of the special requirements. Organic thickeners such as gelatin, starch or cellulose derivatives, natural polysaccharides (gum) or synthetic, water-soluble high polymers change the properties of the water in an often unfavorable way for the mentioned technical applications because adhesive or string-pulling properties occur, or poor durability (oxidative or microbial degradation -ning, cf. Kirk-Othmer, "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology", 3rd ed., vol. 18, p. 623).
CE. Hardy, "Chemicals for Forest Fire Fighting", 3. utg., 1977, Boston). If, on the other hand, only inorganic thickeners are added, such as crystalline silicates (bentonite, attapulgite or mica), as stable diluents for water, then concentrations well above 10% are necessary to achieve technically usable thickening effects, as is known through the use of water thickened with bentonite or attapulgite for forest fire fighting (Literature: eg CE. Hardy, "Chemicals for Forest Fire Fighting", 3rd ed., 1977, Boston). Crystalline layered silicates such as bentonite form after the water has evaporated often unwanted residues that are difficult to remove.
All the aforementioned thickeners for water have in common that, due to the swelling conditions, considerable time (hours to days) is needed to achieve the desired maximum thickening. This is difficult to regulate through external influences and often requires elaborate handling. Through the gelation of unstabilized silica sols or through the neutralization of silica gels made from water glass, a thickening effect can already be achieved at low concentrations, but the gel will continuously release water (syneresis) due to polycondensation of the silicic acids formed during the neutralization, and will shrink in . When water evaporates, hardened residues are formed which are difficult to remove from surfaces, vessels or equipment, cables and the like. It is thus excluded to use such thickened water in, for example, fire extinguishers, sprayers for pesticides, or as a filling medium in e.g. waterbed mattresses. Gelation over time of silicic acid, which is present in low concentrations in water, is also difficult to control, even with the addition of auxiliary substances, such as salts. It is true that highly dispersed, amorphous, synthetic silicic acids do not have the latter unfortunate properties. However, they are predominantly used as thickeners for organic, hydrophobic liquids because, due to their hydrophilic properties, they show a clearly weaker effect as thickeners at low concentrations in water. This also occurs with other liquid hydrophilic media, such as e.g. glycerol.
Det bekreftes også av R.K. Iler i "The Chemistry of Silica", Wiley, New York 1979, s. 336, at dispersjoner av pyrogent fremstilt kieselsyre i vandig løsning danner soler. It is also confirmed by R.K. Iler in "The Chemistry of Silica", Wiley, New York 1979, p. 336, that dispersions of pyrogenically produced silicic acid in aqueous solution form sols. These do not form any strong gels and are therefore of little use as an inorganic binder.
With the present invention, as a solution to the problem of immediate production of thickened water, it has been found that an immediate and permanent thickening can be achieved with high-disperse, synthetically produced silica sols, which are preferably produced from fumed silicic acid which is suspended in water at a low concentration , e.g. slurries of 1-9%, preferably 2-5%, pyrogenic silicic acids, and with only a small addition of certain water-soluble organic compounds, namely ethers of fatty alcohols or sugar alcohols, or esters of fatty acids and polyethylene glycols or polypropylene glycols with a molecular weight of 250- 50,000 in concentrations of 0.005%-1.5%, polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol with a molecular weight of 600 - 50,000 in concentrations of 0.05%-1.5%, polyethyleneimine in concentrations of >0.003, or poly-(N-vinyl-2- pyrrolidone) in concentrations of 0.05%-0.5%. In contrast to the other thickening methods mentioned, and characteristic of this method of thickening, is the system's pronounced rheopexic relationship in particular, which manifests itself immediately upon the impact of shear stresses, such as e.g. by stirring with an electric stirrer (800-1600 rpm), flow through centrifugal pumps or by spraying through nozzles. This increases the thickening and a homogeneous and long-lasting thickening effect is achieved. The mentioned organic compounds can be used in the mentioned concentrations alone or in combination. The use of polyethylene glycol, or the mentioned derivatives thereof, is limited to the pH range 1-9, at higher pH values dilution occurs to the same water-thin consistency as before the addition . With polyethyleneimine, this dilution takes place at pH values below 3. By combining both additives, it is possible to achieve thickening in a correspondingly extended pH range. The synthetic, amorphous silicic acids can also be mixed dry with the aforementioned organic compounds before water is added. This mixture can be stored until use and then the amount of water required to achieve the required concentration is added. It is also possible to mix the silicic acid and the mentioned organic additives directly with water.
The thus prepared, thickened slurry of synthetic amorphous silicic acid in water in low concentration ("thickened water") can, for example, be used with very good results as an extinguishing agent for class A fires (particularly difficult-to-extinguish fires in tires or other plastics), as it also adheres to hydrophobic or hot surfaces in massive form and thus makes it possible to keep thick layers of water in readiness on horizontal, vertical and even on underlying surfaces of all types, it is also suitable as a drilling fluid since it is stable against shear stress under pressure at elevated temperature, and it is usable as a carrier for cleaning agents, such as descaling agents, because it i.a. may contain dissolved acids, such as citric acid, tartaric acid or malic acid, which when applied to calcified surfaces can give a lasting effect.
Use of the thickened water according to the invention is also advantageous as a hydrostatic, pressure-equalizing filling in waterbed mattresses, seat cushions or in gel rooms, by removing wave reflections. Thus, in a flexible seat cushion, the formation of microorganisms in the thickened water has not been observed after a period of several months, while comparable cushions filled with water had slimy deposits on the inner walls after the same period, presumably due to algae formation.
The thickened water according to the invention is miscible with dissolved salts of inorganic and organic acids, also in higher concentrations (e.g. addition of 30% potassium acetate or potassium lactate), so that it can be made frost-proof (e.g. to -30°C ). Sugar and hydrated derivatives thereof such as sorbitol, glycols or glycerol can also be dissolved in the thickened water in desired concentrations without affecting the thickening. Thus, the thus thickened water can also be used as a liquid, recyclable filling in cooling pads, cooling elements or cooling bags. Due to the good handling characteristics during use, these mixtures are also freely refillable and therefore recyclable. This is usually not possible with this type of filling made with organic gel formers. Due to the durable thickening, it is also possible to incorporate stable, organic, insoluble substances, including proteins. This is useful for analytical purposes and also for synthetic-preparative purposes, such as material separation.
For use as a fire extinguishing agent, the thickened water can also be added to foam concentrates (e.g. of AFFF types), whereby both the thickening and the foamability are retained. This results in a thickened foam which, in contrast to foam produced with AFFF alone, shows a significantly improved adhesiveness to surfaces, so that an uncontrolled runoff of the foam is avoided. It is thereby possible to fight fires in solid substances (class A) as well as in flammable liquids (class B).
Følgende eksempler forklarer oppfinnelsen nærmere, uten å begrense denne: The following examples explain the invention in more detail, without limiting it:
Eksempel 1Example 1
2.2 1 of a 15% dispersion of amorphous, synthetic silicic acid ("Wacker HDK KD 150", trademark belonging to Wacker Chemie GmbH, Munich) was mixed with 7.8 1 of water. 20 g of polyoxyethylene lauryl ether with a molecular weight of approx. 380 ("Mulsifan CPA", trademark of Zschimmer und Schwarz, Lahnstein). Immediately after addition, the mixture had an outlet viscosity of 11 s. A 500 ml quantity of the mixture was filled into a spray bottle and then sprayed onto a vertical, smooth aluminum surface. Through the forces that worked during the spraying, the thickening of the mixture was enhanced immediately, so that it adhered completely to the metal surface.
A further portion of 500 ml of the thin liquid mixture in a vessel was stirred for a few seconds with an electric stirrer. Thereby, the mixture was instantly further thickened, and an outlet viscosity of approx. 29 s in the outlet beaker (a small part of the mixture did not flow out of the cone of the beaker). A similarly large thickening can also be achieved by pumping the mixture through an electric centrifugal pump (transport quantity: 68 l/min). (Outlet viscosity approx. 26 s).
De påførte sjikt kan ved behov fjer- Also when spraying with a pesticide sprayer (Gloria, type 172 RTG and 176 T, different spray nozzles) instant thickening and very good adhesion of the thickened water occurred on all types of surfaces. Good adhesion to the plants was also demonstrated, particularly where the water beaded off on the plant's surface due to surface hydrophobicisation. Thus, it is i.a. possible to apply water to the plants in thick layers without loss, possibly also with additional additives, which can be used for improved protection against frost damage or to apply pesticides. The applied layers can be removed if necessary
nes ved avspyling med vann.nose by rinsing with water.
The experiment was carried out with the same result when, instead of polyoxyethylene lauryl ethers, polyethylene glycol with a molecular weight of approx. 4220, polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-stearate with a molecular weight of approx. 1200, PEG-120 jojoba alcohol and PEG-120 jojoba acid (molecular weight approx. 5400), polyethyleneimine or poly-(N-vlnyl-2-pyrrolidone). A thickening effect which was enhanced under the influence of shear stress was already observed at an addition amount of only 0.05% of the mentioned low molecular weight polyoxyethylene derivatives, polyethylene glycol, poly-(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone), or only 0.003% of the polyethylene imine , whereby the viscosities were correspondingly lower. The polyether showed an upper limit of effect of approx. 1.5%, poly-(N-vinylpyrrolidone) had such a limit of approx. 1%, with respect to the total mixture. Above these limits, the slurry of silicic acid in water again changed to the thin-flowing initial state.
Eksempel 2Example 2
Thickened water prepared according to Example 1 was used to extinguish a fully developed fire in 6 car tires. For this, a 10 1 water-based fire extinguisher was used which was in accordance with DIN and which was available in the trade. With 5 1 of the thickened water, the fire was completely extinguished without it flaring up again. In contrast, the same fire could not be extinguished with 12 kg of fire-extinguishing powder, as shortly after the flames had been extinguished with powder, it caught fire again.
Eksempel 3Example 3
Thickened water prepared according to example 1 was filled in a seat cushion as room 5 1, while another cushion of the same type was filled with pure water. The thickened water filling completely prevented wave reflections, while the pad filled with only water had "wave shaking" for a longer period of time. By comparison, there was also a significantly improved sitting comfort when the "wave movements" could be avoided. After a time period of 6 months, both pads were emptied and on examination of the insides, the pad filled with only water showed the formation of a slimy, greenish coating, while the pad filled with the condensed water showed no changes.
A water bed mattress ("Kuss", DLM Mfg. Co., Findlay, Oh., USA, unstabilized) was filled with approx. 500 1 of the thickened water according to example 1. Only through this was a 100% stabilization of the mattress achieved, which was expressed by a reflection time of <1 s when the mattress edge was exposed to a shock impulse. An unstabilized water bed mattress only filled with water, on the other hand, showed a reflection time of >>30 s. A significant improvement in lying comfort was thus achieved without the use of the mechanical stabilization systems that are common in water beds.
Eksempel 4Example 4
Condensed water prepared according to example 1 was mixed with 30% by weight of potassium acetate which dissolved in it. Calcium acetate is described as a so-called "Loaded Stream Agent" in Kirk-Othmer's "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Supplement", 1985, p. 452, for frost protection of water-based fire extinguishers under pressure, and is also described as not very effective for fires of class B. The thickening effect was also retained after the addition. The mixture was cooled for 24 hours to -30°C, whereby the viscous homogeneous consistency was retained. No freezing was detected. After heating, the thickened starting consistency was re-achieved, splitting or precipitates were not detected.
In a small fire-extinguishing experiment with fir roof strips, the thickened mixture demonstrated very good extinguishing properties, which was also expressed through good adhesion to the combustible surfaces. The experiment was repeated, replacing potassium acetate with potassium lactate. Corresponding results were obtained.
In a further experiment, it was found that with a highly concentrated, approx. 30%, solution of potassium acetate or potassium lactate in water without the additives described in example 1, it was possible after adding approx. 3.3% by weight of synthetic amorphous silicic acid to cause a thickening of this mixture, but the adhesion to smooth surfaces (plastic, rubber) was however not as good as for the same mixture with the organic compounds mentioned in example 1. In contrast to what is the case with the organic additives mentioned in example 1, this thickening only takes place at high concentrations of both of the mentioned organic salts.
Eksempel 5Example 5
Thickened water prepared according to example 1 was mixed in three trials with 2%, 3% and 6% of a commercially available AFFF foam concentrate which did not contain the synergistic substances of the polyoxyethylene fatty alcohol ether type. The mixture was found to be foamable with a foam nozzle and, in comparison with foaming with unthickened water or with an unthickened silicic acid slurry in water without thickening additive, showed a thickened foam which unlike the aforementioned "unthickened" foams adhered to surfaces. The "thickened" foam thus obtained is suitable for extinguishing fires in liquid hydrocarbons. They are also particularly effective when fighting fires in solid substances, because they stick to these.
With approx. 5 1 of a thus thickened foam which contained 6% of the AFFF foam concentrate could extinguish a fire in spruce with dimensions 270 cm x 50 cm (7 layers, cross section 2 x 4 cm). There was practically no rekindling of the fire.
Eksempel 6Example 6
A slurry of 150 g of fumed silicic acid ("Aerosil" 200, reg. trademark belonging to Degussa) in 4850 ml of water was mixed with 10 g of poly-(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) ("Sokalan HP 50" or HP 53, reg. . trademark of BASF), and stirred with a glass rod. Thereby a slight increase in viscosity occurred which could be expressed as an expiration time in the beaker according to DIN 53 211 from 9 s (without "Sokalan") to 20 s (with "Sokalan"). If the corresponding mixture is cut for only a short time (1 s) with a stirring rod (Philips Elecctroquirl, 800/1700 U/min, 4 cm diameter on the cutting knife), the viscosity increases to a value corresponding to a paste-like, strongly layer-forming consistency that hangs on the walls , and which hangs in the cone of the outlet cup so that it becomes impossible to determine the viscosity with the cup. The mixture shows very good durability in terms of homogeneity, adhesion to surfaces such as polyethylene, glass and metal, as well as sustained stability against shear stresses, even at 95°C. However, it can still be sprayed through nozzles in ordinary fire extinguishers or pesticide sprayers. The mixture shows a greatly delayed release of water upon direct contact with absorbent substrates, such as e.g. earth.
This is an advantage when using the thus thickened water for extinguishing fires in rubbish dumps because by spraying the extinguishing agent, a sealing application is possible without significant uncontrolled penetration. Unthickened water, on the other hand, penetrates quickly and uncontrollably and is thus quickly lost as an extinguishing agent in the fire-hazardous zones.
Eksempel 7Example 7
An amount of 30 g of fumed silicic acid was mixed with 500 ml of water and 470 g of a solution of sorbitol syrup (70% in water). Through the addition of 2 g of poly-(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and mixing with an "Elektroquirl" at 800 rpm, a ready-to-cast paste was obtained which was used as a filling in cooling bags. At -20°C, the mass was still sufficiently malleable to adapt to uneven surfaces. The pulp could be subjected to frequent freezing and thawing cycles and could thus be reused many times.
Eksempel 8Example 8
A thickened slurry of fumed silicic acid, as in example 1, was mixed with 2% citric, tartaric or malic acid, and 500 ml of this mixture was used to clean calcified stone and plastic surfaces. Through the adhesive effect, a thorough, material-saving cleaning of the calcified surfaces was achieved.
