Abstract
A method and system for reversibly establishing a closed, flow impervious cryogenic barrier (30) about a predetermined volume extending downward from a damming site on the soil surface. A series of boreholes (40) in the barrier extend downward from separate sites on the periphery to the containment site. A stream of coolant medium is established in the barrier borehole (40) whereby the water in the parts of the earth adjacent to the barrier borehole (40) freezes to establish ice columns extending radially around the boreholes. The lateral distance between the boreholes (40) and the radius of the ice columns is chosen so that adjacent ice columns overlap. The overlapping ice columns collectively establish a closed, flow impervious barrier around the predetermined volume below the containment site. The system can detect and rectify potential violations due to thermal, geological or chemical intrusions.
