Abstract

The invention is a semi-permeable membrane comprising a polymeric matrix having two porous surfaces and a region which acts to separate one or more gases from one or more other gases. A composition can be described which can be used for the preparation of a bisphenol-based polycarbonate membrane in which at least 25% by weight of the bisphenol groups are tetrabalogenated, preferably with Cl or Br. The landing comprises (i) a bisphenol-based polycarbonate in which at least 25% weight * of the bisphenol groups are tetrahalogenated, where the halogen is Cl or Br, (ii) a solvent for such a polycarbonate, and (iii) a non-solvent for such a polycarbonate. A process is described in which the mixture is heated and extruded into a mold suitable for membrane use such as a hollow fiber. The formed membrane is then passed through a quench zone where the mixture through phase separation, and the solvent / non-solvent is removed and a discriminating region is formed which has the ability to separate oxygen from nitrogen. The membranes of this invention are found to have excellent separation factors and flux. Such membranes are less likely to be damaged by handling and by exposure to contaminants, due to the inner area affecting the separation, as the porous surfaces act to protect this area.
