Description

The present invention relates to a construction method for a partially submersible rig adapted for use in the sea to drill an oil well or the like at sea.

Partially submersible rigs have been used in the past for the purpose of drilling an oil well in the seabed and the like. This type of partially submersible rig consists, for example, of of a construction which includes a column deck or similar set up on pontoons. This partially submersible rig is built by first building pontoons, then mounting columns, supports and a deck on the pontoons, and mounting a large part of a living space, etc. on the deck, launching and rigging the structure. The width of the partially submersible rig is considerably large and there are therefore cases where it is greater than the width of ordinary ship docks. In such a case, different methods are conceivable where i.a. a large marine dock has recently been built so that a semi-submersible rig built in two blocks in existing docks is assembled in the large marine dock to build a semi-submersible rig. A partially submersible rig that is built in two blocks in the existing docks so that the submersible rig is moved afloat by two partially submerged barges and connected together and thus builds the partially submersible rig or alternatively a partially submersible rig is built with its pontoons or shafts held close together in the existing docks, so that after the partially submerged rig has been launched to be brought to sea, the pontoons or shafts are moved to their normal positions and the supports, etc., adjusted so as to complete the partially submerged rig.

However, these methods have the following disadvantages. To build a new large dock and assemble a partially submersible rig in large docks requires a large investment in equipment. A large equipment investment is also required to first build a large marine dock so that a partially submersible rig can be built in two blocks in existing docks and the partially submersible rigs built in two blocks are linked together in the large marine dock to thereby assemble the rig. The method of building a partially submersible rig in two blocks in existing docks, floating the partially submersible rig built in the two blocks with two partially submerged barges and connecting the blocks on the water and thus assembling the submerged rig involves technically unsolved problems with regard to the techniques of underwater welding at sea, the operation of fluidly moving the partially submerged rig with the two partially submerged barges and connecting them together, etc. Also the construction method of a partially submerged rig, with its pontoons or pillars held close together, in the existing docks, and launching the semi-submersible rig to go offshore, beveling the pontoons or columns to their normal positions and then adjusting supports, etc., so as to complete the semi-submersible rig involve unsolved problems with regard to the required associated jigs, work techniques, safety etc.

It is an object of the invention to provide a method for building a large and wide partially submerged rig with a low equipment cost during a short period of time without requiring a significant amount of cost. To this end, a construction method for a partially submerged rig according to the present invention includes building a partially submerged rig in two transversely separated blocks' in the existing docks, launching the blocks separately, then docking the blocks in a parallel trench where it can be installed on the port side and starboard pontoons respectively, to dry dock the same and then connect the fore and aft blocks and thereby complete the partially submerged rig. In accordance with the invention, a partially submerged rig to be built is divided in the transverse direction into front and rear parts and built in existing docks including efficient equipment and arrangements and therefore it is possible to reduce the number of working steps and thus the working conditions. In accordance with the invention, the blocks are connected to each other in the parallel trench which is low in construction equipment costs and thus gives the effect of not involving technical difficulties and contributes significantly to reducing the rig's construction costs and improving operational safety.

An embodiment of a parallel trench 1 to carry out the invention will now be described. Reference is made to fig. 1, 2 and 3, where a piece of land 3 adjacent to a beach edge 2, temporary lock gates 5 constructed of concrete elements or steel plate supports and removable and remountable at the ends of the parallel ditches 1 including side-by-side arranged port and starboard ditches 4p are arranged and 4s where port and starboard pontoons of a partially submerged rig can respectively be set up therein and which have a sufficient length to accommodate the length of the rig, and the ditches are both provided with a drainage pump not shown which is arranged for to drain the interior of the trench and a well point which is not shown and arranged to drain the water in the trench as well as a concrete block 6 which can withstand the rigging load and which is located at the bottom of the trench, and where the plot of land between the trenches is limited to a height which does not interfere with the rig supports, etc., so as to minimize the amount of ground to be excavated and the width and depth of the trenches are chosen to be suitable ldswise with the desired width for the pontoons and the draft during docking and launching.

The method for building a partially submerged rig through the use of the above-mentioned parallel trenches 1 will now be described, referring to fig. 4, 5 and 6, where the front and rear part of a partially submerged rig to be built in the first and second docks 7 and 8 in the existing docks, that is to say the transversely divided front and rear blocks 9 and 10 of the partially submerged rigs are first built as shown in fig. 4, and after these parts have been launched, as shown in fig. 5 one or the other of the blocks is docked in the parallel trench 1 in accordance with the invention and the remaining block is docked in such a way that the connecting parts of the blocks face each other, after which sluicing is effected at the temporary lock gate 5 and then the suction pumps are operated to evacuate water . Then, as shown in fig. 6, the front and rear blocks are connected and launched as a completed rig 11.
