Description
The present invention relates to a smoke filter for use with smoking articles, e.g. for cigarettes.
It is well known to provide filter cigarettes with a ventilation device, which enables the supply of ventilation air in the filter. One purpose here is to reduce the content of smoke components in the smoke jet. It has been found that when ventilation air flows into a filter comprising a plug of fibrous filter material, e.g. cellulose acetate, through a ventilation zone extending around the filter, the tobacco smoke is caused to flow through the filter in an axial jet whose diameter is smaller than the end face of the filter plug. This relatively thin stream of smoke hits a limited area of taste organs in the smoker's mouth. It is an aim of the invention to provide a filter for tobacco smoke, which when used stimulates the taste organs over a larger area in the smoker's mouth.
The present invention provides a filter comprising a rod-like plug of filter material and with at least one air channel on the outside, the air channel having an outlet opening at the mouth end of the plug and an inlet opening at a distance from the mouth end, and where the air channel presents an area in which the depth decreases progressively along the channel in a direction towards the mouth end of the plug.
Appropriately, the area of decreasing depth extends in the air channel mostly up to the mouth end of the plug. Appropriately, there are a plurality of such air channels which are partly delimited by means of one of a plurality of grooves on the outside of the filter plug and partly by the inside of a sleeve around the filter plug. In this case, the width of the grooves can be constant, but it can also increase or decrease in the direction towards the mouth end of the filter plug.
For at oppfinnelsen klart skal kunne forstås og tilpasses, henvises ved hjelp av eksempel til den etterfølgende tegning, In order for the invention to be clearly understood and adapted, reference is made by way of example to the following drawing,
hvor where
fig. 1 in axial section shows part of a filter cigarette,
fig. 1, fig. 2 shows an end view seen from the mouth end of the filter in the cigarette in fig. 1,
fig. 3 shows an end view from the mouth end of a filter with a slightly different shape than the filter in fig. 1, and
fig.4 viser en utbretting av utsiden av en filterplugg av en ytterligere form. fig.4 shows an unfolding of the outside of a filter plug of a further form.
Sigaretten i fig. The cigarette in fig. 1 comprises a string 1 of cut tobacco wrapped in cigarette paper 2 as well as a filter 3 comprising a cohesive filter plug 4 of fibrous filter material of cellulose acetate. On the outside of the plug 4, a number of, in the figure eight, parallel axially directed grooves 5 extend (see also fig. 2)). As fig. 1 shows, the grooves 5, which extend from the mouth end of the plug 4 along a stretch that is less than the entire length of the plug, are designed in such a way that the depth in each groove decreases towards and mostly all the way to the mouth end of the plug. A suitable way of forming the grooves 5 is to subject the plug 4, or suitably a filter rod from which the plug is produced, to a heat pressing process such as e.g. described in GB-pat. 1,507,765, with the use of appropriately shaped press members. The surfaces in the grooves 5 can be made impermeable.
A sleeve 7 serves as the attachment of the filter 3 to the cigarette string 1,2, the sleeve in the parts that overlap the grooves 5, together with the walls of the grooves 5 delimiting air channels 8. A row of ventilation openings 9 in the sleeve 7, shown in exaggerated size, surrounds the plug 4 at the upstream end of the tracks 5 and are so arranged that they form a connection with each air channel 8 through at least one opening 9.
Ved røking av sigaretten i fig. 1 trekkes omgivende luft When smoking the cigarette in fig. 1 ambient air is drawn
Dette oppfattes av røkeren som forsterkede røkeegenskaper. in through the ventilation openings 9 to the air ducts 8. The air flows unmixed or largely unmixed with tobacco smoke, along the air ducts 8 to their outlet end. As the depth of the grooves .. 5, which partly delimit the air channels 8, decreases in the direction of flow, the air flows out from the channels 8 to the smoker's mouth with a velocity component directed radially outwards. This thus produces a divergent jet of air which carries smoke from the mouth end of the filter plug 4 through the Coanda effect and thereby the smoke is brought into contact with taste organs over a relatively large area in the smoker's mouth. This is perceived by the smoker as enhanced smoking properties.
The filter, of which fig. 3 shows a view of the mouth end, comprises a plug 4' which comprises a single external annular groove 5' instead of being provided with a number of elongated grooves on the outside. In axial section, the groove 5' has a contour similar to the contour at the bottom of each of the grooves 5
i pluggen 4 i fig. 1. 1. A rigid sleeve or nozzle 7' which can be formed from a plastic material, envelops the plug 4<1> and occupies an end part of the cigarette string in the same way as the sleeve 7 in the cigarette in fig. 1. The sleeve 7' must be rigid so that the annular opening 6 at the mouth end of the air channels 8', which is defined between the outer annular groove 5' and the sleeve 7', remains open when the filter is used.
The effect of the filter in fig. 3 is similar to the effect of the filter 3 in fig. 1 and 2. Ambient air is drawn into the air channel 8' through not shown perforations in the sleeve 7' and due to the contour of the groove 5<1>, the air flows into the smoker's mouth as a diverging jet, which causes the smoke to hit a larger surface with taste organs.
3. I fig. Fig. 4 shows a spread out pattern of the outside grooves which can be used as an alternative to the axially directed grooves 5 in the filter in fig. 1 or the only, ring-shaped external groove 5' in the filter in fig. 3. In fig. 4, a filter plug 11 shows a mouth end 10. A first series of external, parallel grooves 13 extend at a slight angle to the axis of the plug 11, while a second series of grooves 14 extend at substantially the same angle but directed in the opposite direction . The two track series 13,14 intersect so that they form a network. Like the series of grooves 5, all the grooves 13,14 have an area of decreasing depth towards and generally all the way to the mouth end 10 of the plug 11. In use, the plug 11 is surrounded by a casing (not shown), which allows access for ventilation air to the grooves 13,14 at a point upstream, producing a smoke dispersing effect similar to that of the previously described filters.
The casing for the filter plug may comprise a permeable plug casing on the outside of the plug as well as a longer, impermeable nozzle casing which overlaps the plug casing and attaches the filter plug to the tobacco string 2. In this case, ventilation openings need only be found in the impermeable casing.
The filter plug can, if desired, be designed as two partial plugs, one of which has the grooves 5, 13, 14 or the only annular groove 5', while the other partial plug is plain.
If desired, the ventilation openings can comprise a micro-perforated part of the casing.
