Description
The present invention is directed to a floor mounted urinal for receiving and drainage of urine from a human user.
BACKGROUND
A toilet is a sanitation facility for the collection and disposal of human urine and feces. Toilets can be with or without flushing water (flush toilet or dry toilets). They can be set up for a sitting posture or a squatting posture. The flush toilets are usually connected to a sewer system in urban areas and to septic tanks in less builtin areas such as cottages. Dry toilets are connected to a pit, removable container, composting chamber, or other storage and treatment device.
A urinal is a sanitary plumbing fixture for urination only, predominantly used by males. It can take the form of a container or simply a wall, with drainage and automatic or manual flushing, or without flush water as is the case for waterless urinals.
In busy washrooms, urinals are installed for efficiency. Compared with urination in a general-purpose toilet, usage is faster, simpler, takes up less space, manage multiple users at once, easier to clean and consumes less water than a flush toilet.
The different types of urinals, be it for single users or as trough designs for multiple users, are often intended to be utilized from a standing position (rather than squatting or sitting), but designs exist which are intended to be used with other postures. A major drawback is that the urinals very often cannot be used be females.
Female urinals also exist on the market but are not widespread. It is possible for females to use male urinals with a female urination device, but this is rather complicated and not preferable for female users, in addition, this is uncommon though due to sex segregation in public restrooms. However, in private homes or and cottages, there might be a need for a waterless urinal for use for both male and females.
As mentioned above, urinals may be used to increase the capacity of toilets by allowing urination on dedicated urinals such that more people can use the toilet at the same time. There might also be cases where there is a need to relieve the main toilet in order to save water, save energy or other related consumption.
US 649239 describes an urinal with a seat, a bowl below the seat and a pipe for guiding urine from the bowl and to the outside of the building in which the urinal is installed.
WO 2017/134942 describes a urinal in which a bowl part can continuously exhibit hydrophilic properties and/or water-repelling properties. The urinal is provided with a bowl part having a concave inner surface, a first water-jetting part installed in the bowl part, and a second water-jetting part installed in the bowl part. Hydrophilic cleaning water in which a hydrophilic coating agent is mixed into water is discharged from the first water-jetting part toward a first region of the inner surface. Water-repelling cleaning water in which a water-repelling coating agent is mixed into water is discharged from the second water-jetting part toward a second region of the inner surface.
WO 2012/117221 describes a fitting for a sanitary unit outlet has a tubular housing having an inlet and an outlet, a grid associated with the housing inlet and a one-way valve associated with the housing outlet. The housing, grid and one-way valve are configured so as to be removable from the sanitary unit outlet as a single entity to permit, for example, the one-way valve to be replaced.
Particularly in the case of incinerating toilets. An Incineration toilet is a toilet where biological waste is incinerated to ashes. The waste can be both human urine and feces. The incineration of the waste requires a great amount of energy (electricity, gas, fuel, etc.) to achieve a sufficient combustion. In this case, there might be a need to provide an apparatus that can relieve the combustion toilet in cases when there is only need for urination, such that energy can be saved.
Hence, it is an object of the present invention to provide a urination device which can relieve an incineration toilet in order to save paper pouches (to collect the urine and feces) and energy in form om electricity, combustion gasses or fuel.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a urinal that can be used without water.
It is another object of the present invention is to provide a urinal that is light weight, easy to mount, easy to maintain, easy to repair and economical to produce.
Yet another object of the present invention to provide a urinal that can be used by both male and females.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the present invention, the term urinal is referred to a sanitary plumbing fixture adapted for urination only. A person skilled in the art will understand that a toilet is not equivalent to a urinal because a toilet can receive both human urine and feces and requires more extensive drainage system. In comparison, a urinal may only receive liquids.
The present invention is directed to a floor mounted urinal for receiving and drainage of urine, the urinal comprises;
- a bowl comprising a sitting section arranged along a perimeter of a top opening of the bowl, and
- an outer casing,
- a drain opening provided at a bottom of the bowl, wherein
urine is received into the bowl via the top opening and wherein the urine is further drained to an external drainage connectable to the drain opening for removal of the urine from the urinal,
the outer casing comprises an upper edge defining an opening of an inner chamber of the outer casing, wherein the inner chamber is adapted to accommodate at least a section of the bowl;
wherein the sitting section is adapted to be connected to the upper edge of the outer casing such that the outer casing is supporting the sitting section;
characterized in that
the outer casing comprise a floor plate provided at a lower end of the outer casing for supporting the entire urinal on the floor;
the outer casing further comprises an internal elevation provided in the inner chamber, and wherein the bowl is supported from below by the internal elevation.
The external drainage may be a pipe connected to urinal for leading the urine from the urinal to a pit, removable container, dredging container, or other storage and treatment device. Thus, the external drainage may be any sanitary drainage pipe adapted for the purpose of removing liquid from the urinal to a proper location for dispose of the urine.
In houses and buildings, drainage pipes are arranged to drain the sanitary waste from the house and buildings and further to a sewer system. Some houses and cottages have drainage pipes that leads the waste to a dredging container arranged under or adjacent to the house or cottage.
In aspect, the urinal of the present invention is adapted to be placed freestanding on a toilet floor and kept upright on the floor surface by its own weight. It may also comprise load arranged on a lower level of the urinal or on a base, such that the urinal is prevented from moving and/or tilting. The urinal may also be held in position by means of magnets, glue, screws or other similar fastening means.
In another aspect, the outer casing may comprise screw holes arranged at a floor plate of the outer casing. The screw holes are arranged for fixing the urinal to the toilet floor surface by means for nails or screws. The urinal may also be arranged with wall brackets for fixing the back part of the urinal to a wall of the toilet room.
In yet another aspect, a wall bracket may comprise a first bracket mounted to the wall surface and a second cooperation bracket mounted to the back of the urinal. The first and second bracket may cooperate by means of screw, snap buckle, nails, adhesive device or interconnection sliding means.
In yet another aspect, the back of the urinal may also be provided with screw holes for fixing the urinal to a wall by means of screw or nails.
The bowl comprises an inner surface and an outer surface. In aspects, the upper edge of the outer casing may be support the bowl at any locating along the outer surface of the bowl. Thus, the upper edge may be connected to the bowl at said any location on the outer surface of the bowl.
The urinal may be used as a waterless urinal. Even though the urinal may still be flushed with water it is constructed for use without water. This requires control of the odor since there will be residues on the inner surface of the bowl and at the bottom which can cause odors escaping from the bowl. To avoid the odor from the bowl into the toilet room, there are two criteria to be considered during the construction of the urinal.
1. The bowl should be deep enough such that the construction itself “traps” the air at the bottom of the bowl. Furthermore, the inner walls of the bowl should have a steep angle such that the urine does not easily stick to the inner surface of the bowl.
2. The sitting ring and urinal should comprise sealings to prevent oxygen access and the air replacement inside the bowl, which again prevents odor to flow out from the bowl.
According to the invention, the bowl may have any suitable dept adapted to receive the urine. The dept of the bowl may be between 22 and 26 cm. Preferably the dept is between 23-25 cm.
Seen in cross sectional and through the centerline of the bowl, the inner wall of the bowl may have an angle relative to the vertical plane in the interval between 10-20 degrees. More preferably, the angle may be between 13-17 degrees. Most preferably the angle is 15 degrees.
The angle of the inner walls of the bowl may have different shapes and curvature and may vary individually. In a preferred embodiment the curvature of the bowl seen in a cross section through the centerline, is concave.
The sitting section may be in form of a protruding edge comprising a flat upper surface and a substantially downward facing edge, and wherein said downward facing edge of the protruding part is adapted to mate with the upper edge of the outer casing. The two edges (downward facing edge of the bowl and the upper edge of the outer casing) may be connected by locking means.
The urinal may be arranged such that the protruding part of the bowl may rest on at least an upper circumferential edge of the outer casing, and such that a vertical force acting on the sitting section will be directly transferred to the outer casing.
In another aspect, the protruding edge of the bowl may comprise locking means, adapted to interact with corresponding locking means provided on the outer casing such that the bowl and the outer casing may be fixed to each other. The locking means may be late least any one of a snap lock, a pin lock, a screw, nail, adhesive device, etc.
The locking means may be a slit or a recess provided on the upper edge of the outer casing, the slit or recess is adapted to interact with a pin or a protruding part provided on the sitting section of the bowl. It should be understood that the arrangement and the location of the cooperating pin and slit may also be made vice versa. The parts may be held together by hooks provided on the pin or protruding parts or by friction or glue.
The sitting section of the urinal provides a more flexible and useful urinal, compared to traditional urinals, since it allows both male and female users. In addition, the separate parts of the bowl and outer casing facilitates production and costs in that the parts may be made separately and in different materials. The parts may be made of at least any one of materials; plastic, glass fiber, carbon, wood, ceramics, composite, etc. Furthermore, the urinal of the present invention facilitates easy mounting and easy replacement of parts in case of damage.
In aspect, the different parts of the urinal may be molded in light weight material such as plastic. Different plastic materials having different properties may be used.
It may be beneficial to use different plastic materials for the different parts of the urinal, in order to reduce the friction and creaking sounds upon joining.
The outer casing may be made in ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic material, and the bowl may be made in PP (Polypropylene) plastic material. The ABS plastic is a low-cost engineering plastic that is easy to machine and fabricate. ABS plastic is an ideal material for structural applications when impact resistance, strength, and stiffness are required. In addition, the ABS plastic is easy to paint and glue and has excellent aesthetic qualities.
The bowl may be made from PP plastic material since it will be in contact with the urine. The PP is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications. PP is more heat resistant and more resistant to environment stress and cracking. In addition, the PP plastic has greater slip properties than the ABS plastic and are therefore more suitable in direct fluid contact such as in a bowl for receiving urine.
The shape of the outer casing may be fabricated in one piece (without cutouts). This solution provides a stronger and more stable construction even though weaker materials are being used.
An advantage of the urinal of the present invention is the easier handling and mounting of the urinal, in that the different parts may be transported and carried independently and assembled at site. Yet another advantage is that each part is easy replaceable in case it need to be replaced due to cracking, breakage or wear.
The floor plate may be an integrated part of the outer casing. The floor plate may also comprise support legs built into a recess of the floor plate. The floor support may also comprise levelling feet’s. The levelling may be by means of screw bolts.
The urinal further comprise a support device arranged between the bowl and the outer casing and wherein the support device is adapted to support the bowl onto the outer casing.
The support device may be an integrated part of any one of the bowl or the outer casing.
The support device may also be a device arranged to be connected to at least any one of the bowl or the outer casing.
As said internal elevation is arranged to support the bowl from below a vertical force acting on the bowl may be transferred to the internal elevation through the support device. The internal elevation forms a cavity on the outside bottom part of the outer casing.
The support device may be at least any one of a; tube section, support legs, support elements, etc. Hence, any supporting device that can support the bowl onto the outer casing.
In one aspect, the support device may be an annular pipe section mounted in extension of the drain opening of the bowl. The annular pipe section is protruding from the underside of the bowl such that the bowl and the annular pipe section forms a funnel like device for drainage of the urine. The annular pipe section is adapted to interact with a through opening provided on the internal elevation of the outer casing, which through opening is arranged for receiving at least a section of the annular pipe section and for supporting the annular pipe section vertically and sideways.
The opening provided on the internal elevation may comprise an edge for supporting the end of the annular pipe section and such that said pipe section in held in position.
The through opening may comprise a connecting device for connecting the drainage opening to an external drainage pipe for removing the urine from the urinal. The external drainage pipe may run through the cavity below the internal elevation of the outer casing.
The floor mounted urinal according to the present invention may comprise a drain cover provided at the drain opening for allowing drainage and preventing setback of urine odor. The drain cover may comprise a strainer and a membrane seal.
In one aspect, the membrane seal be two cooperating sheets arranged compressed on top of each other, and wherein the lower sheet is moveable relative to the upper sheet. The compression of the sheets may be by means of a spring-loaded device. In operation, the weight of the urine liquid will force the lower sheet to separate from the upper sheet such that the urine may pass. When the urine has passed the lower sheet will automatically retracted to the compressed position with the upper sheet, preventing setback of urine odor.
In another aspect, the membrane seal may comprise two rectangular membrane sheets tied or welded together at their longitudinal ends such that they define a through channel between the sheets with an inlet and outlet opening. The two membrane sheets may also be made of one single membrane sheet extending to both sides. To avoid setback of urine odor, the two membrane sheets are arranged next to each other (close as possible) such that air does not naturally escape between the sheets. The membrane seal is arranged in a vertical position having an inlet opening and outlet opening. The inlet opening may be arranged with and annular opening, such that the two sheets are separated, allowing easy entry of the urine liquid into the membrane seal.
The inlet opening may be provided with a coupling for quick connection to the strainer. In operation, the inlet opening of the membrane seal is arranged such that the urine can easily enter the membrane seal in a vertical direction. The weight of the urine fluid will force the urine through the membrane seal and further out through the outlet opening. The outlet opening is similar to a one-way “valve”. Thus, allowing urine to pass out from the membrane seal while prevents setback of odor back into the membrane seal.
It may be preferable that the sheets or membranes are made of thin elastic material. In aspect, the membrane may be made of rubber. More specific, the membrane seal may be made of silicon.
Different drain covers exists on the market and a person skilled in the art would understand that different kind of drain covers may be used.
Accessories such as sitting ring and toilet cover may be arranged to the connected to at least any one of the bowl or the outer casing. It may be advantageously to connect the sitting ring and toilet cover to the upper section of the bowl. As described earlier, in order to have an air tight closure (to avoid odor escaping from the urinal), the sitting ring and toilet cover comprises rubber sealings.

The urinal 10 of the present invention may be provided with a drain cover 15 arranged to be connected to the drain opening 13 of the bowl 12. The drain cover 15 comprises a strainer 28 and a membrane seal 29 connected to the strainer 28. The membrane seal 29 arranged such that it allows drainage of the urine from the bowl 12 and avoids setback of urine odor into the bowl 12.
In aspects, the membrane seal 29 may comprise two rectangular membrane sheets tied or welded together at their longitudinal ends such that they define a through channel between the sheets with an inlet 31 and outlet opening 32. See figure 7. The two membrane sheets are arranged next to each other such that air does not naturally escape between the sheets. The inlet opening 31 may be provided with a coupling for quick connection to a metal strainer 28 and allows easy entry of urine into the membrane seal 29. In use, the membrane seal 29 is arranged such that the weight of the urine fluid will force the urine through the inlet opening 31 of the membrane seal 29 and further out through the outlet opening 32. The outlet opening 32 is arranged such that it allows the urine to pass out from the membrane seal 29 but prevents setback of odor back into the membrane seal 29. Hence, the membrane seal 29 is an odor barrier.
Within the scope of the invention, the membrane seal 29 may also be made in one piece. It may also be preferable that the sheets or membranes are made of thin elastic material. In aspect, the membrane may be made of rubber. More specific, the membrane seal may be made of silicon.

Each levelling feet 26 may be individually adjusted to adjust the height of the outer casing 11. They may be appropriate in cases where the floor surface in not even and thus prevent the urinal from becoming canted.
Figure 6 shows an exploded view of the urinal 10 according to the present invention. The urinal comprises an outer casing 11 arranged to be mounted on a floor surface. The outer casing may be fixed to said floor surface by means of screws trough screw holes (not shown) provided on the floor plate 17 of the outer casing 11. The outer casing 11 comprises an inner chamber 14 adapted to receive at least a section of the bowl 12 such that the outer casing 11 is supporting the bowl 12, and wherein the drain opening 13 is adapted to be connected to an external drainage pipe for removal of the urine.
The method of mounting the urinal 10 comprises the steps of;
a) positioning the outer casing 11 on the floor surface,
b) placing the bowl 12 into the inner chamber 14 of the outer casing 11, c) connecting the bowl 12 to the outer casing 11.
The method may further comprise the steps of:
- prior to step c), connecting a support device 19 between the bowl 12 and the outer casing 11 such that the support device 19 is supporting the bowl 12 on the outer casing 11.
The method may yet further comprise the steps of:
- prior to step b) securing the outer casing 11 to the floor or a wall surface by fastening means.
The sitting ring 22 and the urinal cover 21 may be connected to the bowl 12. The bowl 12 may comprise attaching means for connecting a hinge 24 such that the sitting ring 22 and the urinal cover 21 may be pivotably connected to the bowl.
