Abstract
A tool for installing a liner suspension (1) and an associated liner string comprises a tubular main unit having telescopically related inner and outer tubular units (20, 30) which are cutable (33a) connected to each other for co-rotation. Several downwardly pointing tongues (21) are located on the periphery of the outer tubular unit (30) and engage respectively upwardly facing grooves (31) located on the liner suspension to transmit rotation to the liner suspension in both directions. A downwardly extending core tube (24) attached to the inner tubular assembly (20) passes through the outer tubular assembly. (30) and forms a holding device for the ring part of the collar (42). The collar has f Jaer-loaded arms (42b, c) which hold the head parts, and which respectively engage in an annular groove (16a) which is arranged in the liner suspension for attaching the installation tool to the liner suspension for insertion. The collar (42) is usually released by the installation tool by means of a piston (50) which is activated by liquid pressure and which is located on the core pipe (24). In an emergency, the inner tubular unit (20) can be releasably released from the outer tubular unit (30) and moved downward relative to the outer tubular unit, thereby enabling the collar heads (42c) to be released from the liner suspension.

The invention relates to an installation tool for installing an extension pipe hanger, which hanger has an internal annular groove and upwardly open notches at the upper end and is intended to anchor an extension pipe, which installation tool includes a telescopic device with an inner tubular unit and an outer tubular unit, which is telescopically movable relative to the inner tubular unit; threads on an upper end of the inner tubular unit for connection to a working string; a core tube associated with the inner unit, which core tube passes through the outer unit; a number of downwardly extending pins associated with the outer unit, which pins can be brought into engagement with said upwardly open notches for rotation of the hanger and extension tube upon rotation of said outer unit; a collar slidably mounted on the core tube, which collar has outwardly extending prongs terminating in flared heads which can engage with said inner annular groove to thereby retain the hanger with the installation tool; an abutment sleeve connected to the core tube, which abutment sleeve is arranged and designed to hold the heads of the tentacles in engagement with the inner annular groove; a shear pin that holds the collar against axial movement relative to the core tube; and a piston arranged and constructed for exerting an axial shearing force for selectively cutting off the shear pin by exerting a fluid pressure on the piston, and for subsequent movement of the claims axially relative to the core tube so that the catch arm heads are brought out of engagement with the inner ring groove whereby the hanger is hydraulically released from the installation tool.
It has been common practice in the oil and gas well industry to insert casing some distance down a borehole, and then hang a smaller diameter extension pipe from the lower parts of the casing to traverse the remaining parts of the borehole. This necessarily requires an extension pipe hanger that can properly engage the casing wall to hang the associated extension pipe. The extension pipe hanger usually requires an installation tool to perform the insertion of the extension pipe hanger and the extension pipe.
It is highly desirable that the installation tool is capable of causing rotation of the extension pipe hanger in both directions, so that the extension pipe can possibly be freed from obstacles encountered during the passage through the casing and the unlined part of the well. Many installation tools are known where rotation in a certain direction is made possible, which rotation together with tensile or compressive forces will be able to detach the installation tool from the extension pipe hanger. One problem is that premature ejaculation has been very common.
There are also known installation tools where the release of the extension pipe takes place by means of a hydraulically activated mechanism, but failure of a gasket or a valve, which is part of such a mechanism, prevents the installation tool from being released and will cause the installation tool and the associated extension pipe must be removed from the well for necessary repairs or adjustments.
GB 1,597,441 shows an installation tool with an inner tubular device, an outer tubular device, a core tube, a catch finger mechanism with downward extending fingers intended for engagement in a groove in the hanger, and a connecting pipe member which urges the lower ends of the catch fingers into engagement with the track. The catch fingers are not hydraulically releasable relative to the trailer. After setting the hanger, the tool is mechanically pulled up using equipment on the surface. A stop sleeve moves upwards and releases the claw fingers. The catch finger collar is pulled upwards so that the lower ends of the catch fingers clear of the groove in the hanger, whereby the hanger is released.
From GB 2,048,991 an installation tool is known which is connected to a pressure source on the surface by means of a wire. There is a locating device which can be brought from a retracted position to an extended position by means of a spring. When the locating device is positioned at a locating track, the locating device will exit and thereby control the movement of a valve in the fluid flow path. An opening and closing of the valve produces pressure changes in the fluid flow path. These pressure changes are sensed and inform the operator that the tool is properly located. The valve can also control a fluid flow for carrying out a work operation in the hole. There are no tentacles. Hydraulic pressure can be applied to a ring piston which makes contact with locking segments and drives them outwards and out of engagement with a slot, so that the hanger is thereby released from the tool.
An installation tool is known from US 4,497,371. The tool guides a landing device into a well, towards a seat in a packing drilling recording. A collar is placed hydraulically in the receptacle by moving a pipe sleeve in the longitudinal direction relative to the collar. This relative longitudinal displacement causes locking elements in the collar to engage radially with a locking groove in the recording. In this way, the landing device is placed in the recording. The tool is then released mechanically by rotating the drill string so that a nut element on the tool disengages the collar. There is no catch finger device for releasing the landing gear, and there is no means for hydraulic release.
From US 4,562,889 an installation tool is known which is released mechanically by rotation of the drill string. A nut element releases the tool from the hanger. There are no catch fingers, and no hydraulic release mechanisms either.
From US 4,598,774 an installation tool is known which is released mechanically by rotating the drill string. There is no catch finger device and no hydraulic release means.
From US 4,688,642 an installation tool is known which is connected to a liner by means of a shear pin. Hydraulic pressure is used to move a sleeve for setting the liner and to cut off the cutting pin. No catch finger device is used.
With the starting point in the known technique outlined here, the invention proposes an installation tool as mentioned at the beginning, which installation tool is characterized by a number of tongues on the lower inner unit and a number of grooves on the mentioned outer unit, which tongues can interact with the grooves for rotation of the outer unit by rotation of the inner unit; a shoulder on the tongues or in the grooves, which shoulder enables cooperation in an upper position and a lower position of the inner unit relative to the outer unit, the upper position enabling rotation of the inner unit relative to the outer unit in only one angular direction and the lower position prevents rotation of the inner unit relative to the outer unit; and at least one shear screw which holds the inner unit against rotation relative to the outer unit, which shear screw can be selectively cut off by rotation of the working string, the cutting off of the shear screw enabling rotation of the inner unit relative to the outer unit so that the inner unit can be lowered to the lower position relative to the external unit; in which the stop sleeve and the core tube are fixedly connected to the inner unit so that a movement of the inner unit to the lower position will cause movement of the stop sleeve away from the interaction with the catch arm heads, whereby the catch arm heads can move in and out of engagement with the inner ring groove and thereby mechanically release the extension pipe hanger from the installation tool, in case the hydraulic release fails.
The invention achieves the advantage that the installation tool can be released mechanically from the extension pipe hanger (if the hydraulic release fails).
Further features of the installation tool according to the invention will emerge from the independent claims 2-5.
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to the drawings, where: Fig. IA and IB show respective half-sections of an installation tool according to the invention, shown in the insertion position in relation to a

I fig. IA og IB er det vist en konvensjonell, mekanisk In fig. IA and IB it is shown a conventional, mechanical
Forlengingsrørhengeren omfatter også en del 4 som har utvendige gjenger 4a på den nederste delen, slik at den kan festes til et forlengingsrør. extension pipe hanger 1 with centering springs 2 and head wedges 3 which are movable radially outwards so that they can bite into the wall of the not shown casing pipe. The extension pipe hanger also includes a part 4 which has external threads 4a on the bottom part, so that it can be attached to an extension pipe.
As the construction of the trailer is conventional, there is no need for any further detailed description here. Although the trailer is shown here as a mechanically activated trailer, a hydraulically activated trailer could just as easily be used.
To the upper part of the extension pipe hanger 1, a coupling sleeve 6 is attached by means of external threads la, by means of which the installation tool 10 according to the invention is attached to the extension pipe hanger in order to cause both rotary and axial movements of the hanger 1. The coupling sleeve 6 has an annular inside track 6a. The upper part has several circumferential and spaced upwards open grooves or notches 6b. It is specifically required that both of these elements be present on the extension pipe hanger in order to connect them to the installation tool 10 according to the invention.
If desired, an extension sleeve 7 can be screwed onto the outer threads 6c on the upper end of the coupling sleeve 6. Sealing is provided in this area by means of O-rings 6d and 7a. The sleeve forms a sealed bore 7b, which can be used with tools other than an installation tool to form a tight connection with the extension pipe hanger 1 after the hanger is positioned and the installation tool is removed.
With reference to fig. 2A and 2B, which are on a somewhat larger scale, it can be seen that the installation tool 10 according to the invention includes a telescopic mechanism consisting of an inner unit 20 and an outer unit 30. The inner unit 20 has an additional connection sleeve 22 on top, with inner thread 22a for connection with the lower part of a working string not shown. The lower end of the connecting sleeve 22 at the top has internal threads 22b which are connected to the top of a core tube 24 which descends through the entire length of the outer end assembly 30 of the tool 10. An 0-ring 22c provides a seal for the threads 22b, and a set screw 22d locks the threads.
The outer unit 30 has several peripheral and spaced slots 33 which extend downwards and into which pins 26 can slide. The pins 26 are in turn attached with bolts 26a to a mounting ring 28. The mounting ring 28 is tensioned in a downward direction by of a feather 25.
5b. The outer unit 30 of the tool 10 is connected to the inner unit 20 for co-rotation and axial movement by means of several tongues and grooves 21 and 31 which engage each other and which are located respectively on the lower end of the inner unit 20 and the upper end of the outer unit 30. The exact design of these cooperating tongues and grooves is best shown in the geometric representation in fig. 5a. The tongues and grooves are cutably held in engagement with each other by means of several circumferential and spaced radial shear screws 33a in the outer unit 30, which shear screws engage with the core tube 2. Based on the design of the interacting tongues and grooves, it will be seen that a limited rotation to the left of the inner unit 20 in relation to the outer unit 30 will be possible after the shear screws 33a have been cut off. After such cutting off and rotation, the inner unit 20 and the core tube 24 can be moved down a limited distance in relation to the outer unit 30, as shown in fig. 5b.
The lower parts of the slots 33 in the outer unit 30 end in a conical surface 30c, so that the lower parts of the pins 26 will project radially from this conical surface. These protruding pin parts cooperate with the open, upwardly facing groove 6b, which is located on the upper part of the coupling sleeve 6, and will enable the transmission of rotation in both directions to the extension pipe hanger during insertion of the drill string. The conical surface 30c faces a similar surface (not shown) on the sleeve 6 to thereby transfer weight of the extension pipe hanger to the extension pipe hanger in case it is required for the insertion or placement of the extension pipe hanger. The lower end of the outer unit 30 includes a sleeve element which, together with the outer surface of the core tube 24, defines an annular space 45. A collar 42 is mounted in this space, and it includes a ring part 42a, arm parts 42b which are arranged circumferentially and at intervals and extending downwards, as well as thickened heads 42c at the end of the arms, with pressure surfaces 42d, 42e and 42f formed on the heads. The heads 42c fit into the ring groove 6a on the coupling sleeve 6 (fig. IA). The heads 42c are held in this position in engagement with the ring groove 6a by means of a stop ring 29 which is secured with threads, in cooperation with the external threads 24b on the lower end of the core tube 24. A seal is there provided by means of an 0-ring 29b. One or more set screws 42g secure the threaded connection. A stop ring 29 has an inclined surface 29a which faces upwards and which can engage the inclined surface 42f which faces downwards and which is located on the inside of the heads 42c. In this way, the installation tool 10, when it is in the insertion position, will be attached to the extension pipe suspension 1 with a view to all axial movements, whereby the heads 42c and the ring groove 6a have a mutually engaging cooperation.
The ring portion 42a of the collar 42 is slidably mounted on two axially adjacent sleeves 44 and 46. The upper sleeve 46 defines the outer member of a locking ring mechanism 48 which cooperates with special "wicker" threads 24c formed on the core tube 24. The upper sleeve 46 is shearably secured in adjacent relationship to the lower collar support sleeve 44 by means of a shear pin 45. The lower part of the collar support ring 44 has external threads 44a which cooperate with the threads of a sleeve 47. The sleeve forms a cylinder and surrounds the core tube 24 at a distance , over a radial opening 24d in the core tube. Gaskets 50 (Fig. 6) are mounted between the outer surface of the core tube 24 and the inner surface of the cylindrical sleeve 47 to thereby form a liquid pressure chamber 49. Each gasket 50 has identical construction and includes a central 0-ring 50a which on either side goes against a ring 50b of extrusion-resistant tetrafluorocarbon elastomer, also known under the trademark "Teflon". On the other side of each such packing there is a metal ring 50c.
The lower gasket 50 is axially fixed between a C-ring 51 which works together with corresponding grooves on the outside of the core tube 24 and a sleeve 52. The upper gasket 50 is free so that it can move in sealing cooperation on the core tube 24 as that when a liquid pressure is supplied to the chamber 49, this seal will act as a piston to move the collar's support sleeve 44 upwards and exert enough force against it to shield the shear pin 43. This enables a movement of the collar 42 upwards. By this movement, the heads 42c will be released from the stop ring 20 and they will be able to be pressed inwards under the influence of an upper inclined surface in the annular groove 6a in the coupling sleeve 6, and also with the help of the lower end 37a of the outer unit 30 (Fig. 3B ). As shown in fig. 3b, the collar 42 is fixed in its raised position, the locking ring mechanism 48 cooperating with the threads 24c on the core tube 24.
Fluid pressure is generated in the barrel in the core tube 24 by dropping a ball onto an upwardly facing seating surface (not shown) in the barrel or in a supplementary sleeve which is screwed together with the internal threads 29e in the bottom end of the stop ring sleeve 29. Of course, this hydraulic release of the installation tool 10 carried out after the extension pipe hanger 1 is placed, so that the axial force on the heads 42 is adapted by the operator to a minimum, preferably zero.
If for some reason the hydraulic release mechanism described above should not work, the installation tool 10 can still be released by mechanical manipulation. The drill string is then first turned to the left to cut off the shear pins 33a which hold the inner unit 20 together with the outer unit 30. After the limited movement to the left of the inner unit 20 made possible by the cooperating tongues 21 and the grooves 31, it can be applied a lowering weight to thereby displace the inner unit 20 and the core tube 24 downwards in relation to the outer unit 30. This displacing movement causes a downward displacement of the opposing stop ring sleeve 29 in relation to the heads 42c, so that the heads are released and can be pressed inwards, a movement exerted by the inclined sides of the annular groove 6a in which the heads engage, when the installation tool is withdrawn from the hanger.
To ensure that the subsequent upward movement of the drill string to recover the isolation tool 10 does not again cause the heads 42c to engage in the ring groove 6a, a C-ring 46a engages the collar ring portion 42a. The cutter screws 45 are cut off so that the threads 24c can move downwards relative to the locking ring mechanism 48 (Fig. 4B). The downward movement of the core tube 24 caused by the settling weight which causes the shear pin 45 to cut off allows the collar 42 and the mounting sleeve 46 to remain stationary while the core tube 24 moves downward. As a result of this relative movement, the threads 24c of the core tube 24 are acted upon by the snap ring mechanism 48 and the collar 72 is displaced permanently in the higher position relative to its original insertion position, thereby enabling the heads 42c to be pressed inwardly upon contact with the side of the annular slot 6a, so that the installation tool can be fully retracted from the extension pipe hanger 1.
It will appear from the preceding description of the invention that a simple and economically manufacturable hydraulically activated installation tool for an extension pipe hanger has been provided. If the hydraulic release mechanism fails, the installation tool can be easily released from the extension pipe hanger by mechanical manipulation of the drill string. A further feature of the invention is that the installation tool can be reconnected to the extension pipe hanger after the original release, to effect a rotation of the extension pipe hanger. Such rotation can be accomplished by simply lowering the installation tool down so that it engages the extension pipe hanger, and by rotating the tool until the tongues 26 pointing downwards will engage the respective grooves 6b on the upper end of the coupling sleeve f a 6.
