Description

WET ROOM ELEMENT AND WET ROOM WITH SAID ELEMENT
Technical Field
The present invention relates to wet rooms, such as bathrooms. More specifically, the invention relates to an element for wet rooms, wet rooms comprising the element, and a method of building a wet room. The element is light and inexpensive and facilitates rehabilitation or modification in addition to being feasible for prefabricated wet rooms and wet room modules.
Background Art
Currently, when building new houses for living, bathrooms are typically prefabricated to a large extent, and is lifted in place by a building crane. Often, the bathroom is one single module, and if not, the modules can be too big and heavy to handle and transport out, and difficult to separate, making later modification or rehabilitation of the bathroom difficult and expensive. For example, patent publication EP 3009 576 A1 describes and illustrates a wet room module with a floor and at least one wall, wherein the module is difficult to separate if so required for rehabilitation or modifications at a later stage. Other examples on technology on wet rooms are described and illustrated in the patent publications US 2009/0100769 A1, US 3,015,110 A, US 4987619 A,
US 4653128 A and US 5742956 A.
The objective of the present invention is to provide technology for wet rooms and wet rooms that are beneficial both for prefabrication and rehabilitation.
Summary of invention
The invention provides an element for wet rooms, the element comprising a flat part made of known material used for wet rooms, such as in substance glass fiber reinforced polyester or polystyrene, wherein a top surface of the flat part of the element, as seen in cross section, is parallel to an x-axis and an y-axis is perpendicular inwards from the top surface.
The element is distinguished in that it comprises at least one of a male coupling member and a female coupling member on at least one side of the flat part of the element, wherein
the female coupling member comprises, a first y wall extending inwards along the y-axis, a first x wall extending along the x-axis; and a second y wall extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface, and
the male coupling member comprises, a first y wall extending inwards along the y-axis; a first x wall extending in negative x direction under the top surface; and preferably a second y wall extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface,
wherein one or both of the female and male coupling members comprises a shoulder, said shoulder comprising from said top surface; a first groove (or shoulder) y wall (or a shoulder y wall) extending inwards along the yaxis; and a first groove (or shoulder) x wall (or a shoulder x wall) extending along the x-axis;
whereby a male coupling member fits with appropriate minimum clearance into a female coupling member, forming a groove open toward the top surface, wherein the groove is to be filled with glue, and the groove is formed between respective female and male coupling member shoulders or one of said shoulders and a female or male coupling member first y wall, with the female and male coupling member of adjacent elements as coupled.
For fixation and sealing of the male and female coupling members of adjacent elements as coupled, the groove is filled with glue.
Preferable embodiments and features are as defined in dependent claims 2-6.
The invention also provides a wet room, such as a bathroom, the wet room comprises at least one element of the invention. A preferable embodiment is as defined in claim 8.
In addition, the invention provides a method of building a wet room, as defined in claim 9. A preferable embodiment is defined in claim 10.
The invention also provides use of an element of the invention, for building a wet room.
Features of further preferable embodiments are as described below and illustrated in the figures.

Detailed description of the invention
The Figures 1-4 illustrate the basic principle and structure of the invention, excluding any unnecessary features than those described, for clarity.
Figure 1 illustrates an element 1 of the invention, with a top surface 2 of the element, where tiles can be or already are glued on the top surface. The element is a plate structure, in the illustrated embodiment with a female coupling member 3 on the right side and a male coupling member 4 on the left side, as seen when facing the top side. The general shape of the female and male coupling elements is illustrated as respective details in cross-section.
Figure 2 illustrates another element 1 of the invention, with a top surface 2 of the element, where tiles can be or already are glued on the top surface. Again, the element is a plate structure, but in the illustrated embodiment with a male coupling member 4 on the right side and a female coupling member 3 on the left side, as seen when facing the top side.
Figure 3 illustrates a further embodiment of an element of the invention, in this embodiment male coupling members 4 are arranged on both sides of the element.
The illustrated element embodiments of Figures 1-3 are typical wall elements, typically with a male or alternatively a female coupling member in a lower side end (not illustrated).
In a wet room of the invention, comprising elements of the invention, the element with male coupling members on either side is preferably arranged in the wall as the last element, covering the area with all or most feedthroughs, couplings, piping and cables. A preferable principle according to the present invention, using elements of the invention, is that when building, the element with male coupling members on either side is fastened last during building and removed first during rehabilitation or other type of work requiring access and removal of elements. The fastening is at least by filling the groove with wet room glue, thereby gluing elements together and sealing the groove for any water ingress. The elements can preferably include further means for preliminary holding in position, such as Velcro or other quick or snap fastening means on the back surface of the elements, and means for permanent fixation or fastening, on the back surface or the sides of the elements.
The glue is easily removed when required to remove elements, by using a compass saw, a cutter, a mill or another feasible tool. Preferably, the cutting or milling depth is adjusted or chosen to fit the glue filled groove depth while the tool width at maximum can be as wide as the groove, preferably narrower. For cutting blades and milling tools, the outer edges are preferably dulled if possible, for not to cut into the groove sides as formed by the mated coupling members.
Any quality wet room glue or other water proof glue, preferably being at least slightly flexible as opposed to totally rigid or hard as hardened, is feasible, such as PUR wet room glue.
One element can for example cover the full wall height, typical 220 or 230 cm, and be for example 120 cm wide. Such element, with typical tiles and glue will weigh about 75 kg. Smaller size elements will weight proportionally less in principle.
Further reference is made to Fig.4, illustrating an embodiment of an element of the invention in more detail, how the female 3 and male 4 coupling members are joined and fastened, illustrating only the features to be described, for clarity. The female coupling member 3 comprises, from said top surface 2; a first groove y wall 5 extending inwards along the y-axis; a first groove x wall 6 extending along the x-axis; a first y wall 7 extending further inwards along the yaxis, a first x wall 8 extending further along the x-axis; and a second y wall 9 extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface. The male coupling member 4 comprises, from said top surface 2; a first y wall 10 extending inwards along the y-axis; a first x wall 11 extending in negative x direction under the top surface; and preferably a second y wall 12 extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface.
On the right-hand side of Fig.4, a male coupling member is illustrated, with dotted line, as inserted in the female coupling member 3. As seen, with the male 4 and female 3 coupling members as coupled with respective matching female and male members on adjacent elements, a male coupling member fits with appropriate clearance into a female coupling member, which forms a groove open toward the top surface, the groove is between the female coupling member first groove y wall 5 and first groove x wall 6 and the male member first y wall 10. The groove 13 is filled with glue 14. However, contrary to what is illustrated in the figure for clarity, the groove 13 is filled completely with glue 14. The groove 13 is open upwards, toward the top surface 2, which provides access for glue filling and removal.
In this example embodiment, the shoulder is on the female coupling member, in the form of first groove y wall 5 and first groove x wall 6. In other embodiments, the shoulder can be on the male coupling member, in addition to or instead of the shoulder on the female coupling member. Similar first groove y wall 5 and first groove x wall 6 are thereby formed also on the male coupling member.
Typical dimensions for the female coupling member first groove y wall 5 is about 1 cm, the first groove x wall 6 is about 0,5 cm. Said dimensions can preferably be adapted so that they correspond to the tile glue joint width, typically 3-6 mm wide, meaning that the female coupling member (first) groove x wall is typically 3-6 mm wide. For example, a glue joint width between the tiles of 4 mm, preferably results in a second groove x wall of the female coupling member of 4 mm or less.
The female coupling member first y wall 7 is typical about 3 cm, the first x wall 8 is typical about 3 cm, and the second y wall 9 is typically about 3 cm.
The male coupling member first y wall 10 is typically about 3,9 cm, the first x wall 11 is typically about 2.9 cm, and the second y wall 12 is typically about 2.5 cm. The male coupling member second y wall 12 can however be shorter or be replaced with an edge or rim abutting against the female coupling member second y wall. Abutting contact is required for mechanical stability and tightness. The typical dimensions are examples only and can be varied broadly. The dimensions are given as width dimensions. For example, the female coupling member first groove y wall 5 is about 1 cm, which means that said first groove y wall extends about 1 cm in the y direction from the start point at the top surface 2.
Said dimensions can be varied broadly, for example within a factor range from 0,2 to 4, however matching dimensions for male and female coupling members must be ensured.
As mentioned, the Figures 1-4 illustrate the basic principle and structure of the invention, excluding any unnecessary features for clarity.
but deviation from parallel can be up to within ±45°.
In corners between wall sides, and against the floor, special arrangements will typical be required. The simplest corner variation is to adjust the male members by rotating it 90° so the male coupling member extends out as an extension of the top surface 2. In Fig.4, if rotating the top surface 2 of the dotted male member 90° against the clock (rotating the male member 90° against the clock), an embodiment of a corner structure is achieved. More preferably, the corner elements include a prefabricated corner, with male or female coupling on either side preferably at least 25 cm or at least one tile width from the corner. Such elements comprise two flat parts, one on either side of the corner. Moving the coupling members away from the corners facilitates the work by providing easy access for tools for gluing and tools for cutting out the glue if required later.
The floor elements, if extending to the sides of the floor, preferably extend a distance upward on the wall, such as about 25 cm or a distance corresponding to between the first and second, or second and third, row of tiles on the wall, as counted from below. Easy access, good working positions, and prefabrication of corner element are thereby achieved.
The floor preferably comprises one or several special floor elements of the invention, including slope towards an outlet/drain. Alternatively, the floor can be of a known floor design, in any embodiment.
In some preferable embodiments, the female and male coupling members are conical, such as about 1-5 ° inclined for all y-walls. Preferably, conicity is combined with spring flexibility. The effective clearance can then easily be reduced to nothing, closing any leakage path of the glue between walls 7 and 10 effectively. The clearance is in general 0,1-1 mm, preferably 0,1 -0,5 mm.
In other embodiments, the male and female coupling members are curved, as convex and concave structures, still having a wall section of the male part to confine the groove side.
In a preferable embodiment, the male coupling member is more conical and more elastic flexible than the female coupling member. For example, the first x wall 11 of the male coupling member can be about 80% or less the width of the second x wall 8 of the female coupling member, and the material thickness of the male member, preferably below the groove depth, can be thinner and thus more flexible. Easier coupling, allowing some self-adjustment in the coupling, is thereby achieved.
The female or /and male coupling members are preferably made of metal, such as steel, at thickness providing some flexibility. Not cutting through the groove walls (for the walls confining the groove: 5, 6 and 7 or10 upper part) by tools when removing the glue joint is crucial. At least the female coupling member first y wall, first x wall and the male coupling member first y wall upper part longer than the female member first y wall, are made of metal or other hard material not being cut through by typical tools to be used. Alternatives to metal are hard polymers, composites or sufficiently thick softer materials, where the thickness prevents cutting through the material.
In a preferable embodiment of the element and method of the invention, the w
inserts of metal on the parts on the sides 5,10 or 7 and bottom 6 of the groove.
Figure 5 illustrates a wet room of the invention, in the form of a bathroom, comprising elements of the invention, as an example embodiment.
Figure 6 illustrates a typical element embodiment of the invention, in crosssection. The element includes an extruded polyethylene or extruded or molded polyester or polystyrene core 15, optionally with glass fiber cloth 16 (part of the line) or similar on one or either side. The top surface 2, facing the wet room, is covered with tiles 17, glued onto the top surface with tile glue 18. The element is a typical wall element, with a male coupling member on one side and a female coupling member on the opposite side. In the bottom side towards the floor of the wet room, a male coupling member is provided (not illustrated), alternatively a female coupling member. On the top side, towards the roof, no coupling member is arranged, but can be. In the illustrated embodiment, the shoulder 10s of the male first y wall is longer than the first groove y wall 5 of the female member, to withstand wear of a cutting tool. The rest or the leg of the male first y wall is thinner than the shoulder 10s, providing more flexibility and reduced weight. The wall elements of the male coupling member not to face the groove, items 10l, 11 and 12, are thinner than the adjacent wall elements of the female coupling member as coupled, items 7, 8 and 9, which provides increased flexibility and reduced weight. The male coupling member can be more conical and/or rounded, in addition or instead of having thinner walls. Each of the male and female coupling members are embedded into the top surface 2 a distance, for anchoring, said distances for anchoring may or may not include protrusions.
In Figures 7 and 8, elements with a male coupling member including a shoulder is illustrated. Said male coupling member is arranged on a traditional floor, in Figure 7, and as coupled to a floor element of the invention, wherein the coupling is an elevation above the floor elevation, illustrated in Figure 8. The groove is formed by said shoulder, and is filled with wet room glue.
The male coupling member can be massive, that is without voids or open volume inside the surfaces. For example, a male coupling member can be molded in polyester or polystyrene, preferably with a metal insert in the surfaces forming the groove when joined with a female coupling member.
The elements per se are very feasible for automated production. The coupling members are preferably parts of the molding form for molding the core material.
The tiles are ending adjacent the groove structure, providing access for gluing and cutting or milling. This means that the element joints in position coincides with tile joints. In other embodiments, a narrow tile row may cover the element joints, or the element joints may not coincide with tile joints, which represent embodiments requiring more labor, but which are better if the element joints are wider than the tile joints.
Preferably, element joints are 1-2 mm wider than tile joints if they coincide in position, in order not to damage the tiles when cutting or milling.
With the elements and wet rooms of the invention, adjusting, correcting, modifying or rehabilitating becomes far easier than for traditional prefabricated wet rooms.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
    1.
    Element for wet room, comprising a flat part made of known material used for wet rooms, such as in substance glass fiber reinforced polyester or polystyrene, wherein a top surface of the flat part of the element, as seen in cross section, is parallel to an x-axis and an y-axis is perpendicular inwards from the top surface, c h a r a c t e r i s e d i n that the element comprises at least one of a male coupling member and a female coupling member on at least one side of the flat part of the element, wherein
    the female coupling member comprises, a first y wall extending inwards along the y-axis, a first x wall extending along the x-axis; and a second y wall extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface, and
    the male coupling member comprises, a first y wall extending inwards along the y-axis; a first x wall extending in negative x direction under the top surface; and preferably a second y wall extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface,
    wherein one or both of the female and male coupling members comprises a shoulder, said shoulder comprising from said top surface; a first groove y wall (or a shoulder y wall) extending inwards along the y-axis; and a first groove x wall (or a shoulder x wall) extending along the x-axis;
    whereby a male coupling member fits with appropriate minimum clearance into a female coupling member, forming a groove open toward the top surface, wherein the groove is to be filled with glue, and the groove is formed between respective female and male coupling member shoulders or one of said shoulders and a female or male coupling member first y wall, with the female and male coupling member of adjacent elements as coupled.
    Element according to claim 1, wherein the groove is a glue groove, to be filled with glue for fixing the elements together in a water proof way.

    Element according to any one of claim 1 or 2, wherein the element comprises a female coupling member on one side and a male coupling member on the opposite side.

    Element according to any one of claim 1 or 2, wherein the element comprises a male coupling member on one side and a male coupling member on the opposite side.

    Element according to any one of claim 1 to 4, wherein the female and male coupling elements are conical in cross section.

    Element according to any one of claim 1 to 5, wherein the female coupling member is curved concave and the male coupling member is curved convex.

    Wet rom, comprising a floor, walls and a roof, c h a r a c t e r i s e d i n that the wet room comprises elements for wet room, wherein the elements are glued together, wherein each element comprises: a flat part made of known material used for wet rooms, such as in substance glass fiber reinforced polyester or polystyrene, wherein a top surface of the flat part of the element, as seen in cross section, is parallel to an x-axis and an y-axis is perpendicular inwards from the top surface, wherein the element comprises at least one of a male coupling member and a female coupling member on at least one side of the flat part of the element, wherein
    the female coupling member comprises, a first y wall extending inwards along the y-axis, a first x wall extending along the x-axis; and a second y wall extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface, and
    the male coupling member comprises, a first y wall extending inwards along the y-axis; a first x wall extending in negative x direction under the top surface; and preferably a second y wall extending outwards, in negative y direction, to an end at a position inward to said top surface,
    wherein one or both of the female and male coupling members comprises a shoulder, said shoulder comprising from said top surface; a first groove y wall (or a shoulder y wall) extending inwards along the y-axis; and a first groove x wall (or a shoulder x wall) extending along the x-axis;
    whereby a male coupling member fits with appropriate minimum clearance into a female coupling member, forming a groove open toward the top surface, wherein the groove is to be filled with glue, and the groove is formed between respective female and male coupling member shoulders or one of said shoulders and a female or male coupling member first y wall, with the female and male coupling member of adjacent elements as coupled.

    Wet room according to claim 7, comprising an element with male coupling members on at least two opposite sides, arranged over the area on the wall of the wet room including most feedthroughs and couplings, with left-right mirror symmetric elements on the respective sides.

    Method of building a wet room, c h a r a c t e r i s e d i n that the method comprises to use elements according to any one of claims 1-6, and gluing said elements together by filling the groove between male and female coupling members as assembled with wet room glue.

    Method according to claim 9, whereby an element with male coupling members on the area with most feedthroughs and/or couplings, is arranged as the last element to be arranged in position and glued together by filling the groove between female and male coupling member with glue, after first having arranged elements to the left and to the right and below.
