Description
PRIORITY LIGHT BAR WITH VORTEX GENERATORS
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
The present invention refers to a priority light bar which incorporates a series of vortex generators that improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle and the reduction of dynamic efforts in fastening the light bar to the vehicle.
It is of particular use in the industry related to automotive accessories.
TECHNICAL PROBLEM TO ADDRESS AND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The incorporation of vortex generators in the state of the art is widely known. Its implementation in the automotive sector is under continuous development to improve the stability of aircraft. Likewise, its incorporation in formula-1 cars represents one of the widest fields of action for improvement as to aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicles.
However, at user-level, aerodynamic design has been practically overtaken by the design of the surfaces or to the implementation of ailerons. The implementation of vortex generators has not been introduced yet, being al most relegated to situations where great speeds are developed or where the aim is to achieve great increases of aerodynamic efficiency.
Dealing briefly with aerodynamic concepts, it may be said that the drag depends on the speed attained and on the surface of incidence. The air, upon hitting against a surface and depending on the incidence degree, due to the speed differences generated by the friction, begins to form different layers of air, such as sheets, each at different speeds, which is lower the doser it is to the surface. Depending on the shape of the surface and its drag, there could be layers of air which are stalled or even going backwards, obstructing the air which flows correctly, stopping it and diverting its direction, finally creating turbulences.
To understand this effect, it should be considered that the layers forming the aerodynamic flow are, in turn, composed of particles.
From the aerodynamic standpoint, the aim is to make this flow as laminar as possible, and that the particles of each layer travel as orderly as possible, such that they do not interfere with each other, thus causing aerodynamic resistance in the shape of turbulences.
The set of particles that come into contact with the incidence surface is known as boundary layer. This layer, due to friction, loses speed and tends to adopt that of the surface with which it comes into contact. This speed reduction in turn lowers the speed of the following layer and so on until said effect is lost.
These are the situations wherein a vortex generator is used to modify the behaviour of air, succeeding in preventing the air from taking directions which are counter-productive for the incoming air. On paper, generating a vortex is counter-productive, since it is about converting a laminar flow into turbulent flow, converting a set of layers with organized particles into chaos causing turbulences and aerodynamic resistance.
The flow generator creates small controlled vortexes which minimise damage by creating small turbulences which delay a bigger one that would cause the detachment of the boundary layer. It is about worsening the quality of the aerodynamic flow to therefore preserve its effect for a longer period of time.
Vortex generators are vanes or terminations that cause the air passing through this area to exit as from the moment it comes into contact in the shape of a vortex or whirlwind.
The object of the vortex is to affect aerodynamics, achieving several effects, the most usual of which are redirecting the air to certain areas, managing to eliminate or control turbulences, preventing the boundary layer of air from breaking, aerodynamically sealing areas of the vehicle or reducing the drag of certain shock parts.
In the present invention, the problem concerned is caused by the incorporation of a light bar on the roof of the vehicle. This additional accessory affects the aerodynamics of the vehicle creating, between both elements, a narrow and elongated gap, wherein the boundary layer is broken and turbulences affecting the aerodynamics of the vehicle are generated.
The solution proposed by the present invention is focused on incorporating a series of vortex generators that prevent the creation of the above-mentioned turbulences, improving the grip of the light bar to the vehicle and the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention describes a priority light bar to be located on the roof of a vehicle. The light bar incorporates a plurality of vortex generators located on the surface closest to the roof of the vehicle, wherein an opening is created which generates aerodynamic turbulences. Vortex generators are aligned and equidistant relative to the edge of the light bar receiving the air.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
To complete the invention being described, and so that the features of the invention may more readily be understood, according to a preferred embodiment thereof, it is accompanied by a set of drawings in which the figures described below have been represented, for illustrative and not limiting purposes: - Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a priority light bar incorporated to the roof of a vehicle. - Figure 2 shows a lateral view of a priority light bar with vortex generators incorporated to the roof of a vehicle. - Figure 3 shows an underside view of a priority light bar with vortex generators of the invention.
Provided below is a list of the references used in the figures:

3. Vortex generator.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
The present invention refers to a priority light bar (1) located on the roof of a vehicle (2), which incorporates a plurality of vortex generators (3).
As it may be appreciated in Figures 1 and 2, the location of the priority light bar (1) on the roof of the vehicle (2) creates an open area at the junction which is prone to creating turbulences. This turbulence area negatively affects the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle. Turbulences created between the light bar (1) and the roof of the vehicle (2) generate, in addition, certain vertical forces that may even lead to the detachment of the fastening.
As it may be seen in Figure 2, the light bar (1) of the invention incorporates a series of vortex generators (3) in its lower surface, the one closest to the roof of the vehicle (2) and where the area of turbulences is located. Vortex generators succeed in converting these turbulences into a laminar flow which extends throughout the lower surface of the light bar (1), until its outlet, thus avoiding the previously mentioned problems related to aerodynamics and fastening.
Vortex generators (3) are located covering the air inlet between the light bar (1) and the roof of the vehicle (2).
Figure 3 shows a way of representing the configuration of the different vortex generators (3). The number of vortex generators (3) to be included in the light bar (1) will depend on the speed and the conditions of use of the vehicle, on the geometry of the vortex generators (3) and, especially, on the design of the surfaces of the two junction elements in the turbulence area. For using it in a city at controlled speeds that may vary between 50 and 120 km/h, vortex generators (3) represented in the figure are separated at a distance of 100 +/-20 mm. The lower surface of the light bar (1) may be as flat as possible, the reinforcements for the fastening elements to the roof (2) being the only interferences.
It needs to be considered that the present invention is not limited to the embodiment disclosed herein. Other embodiments can be made by those skilled in the art following the present description. In consequence, the scope of the invention is defined by the following claims.
