Description
The invention relates to a method and device for removing parasites and micro-organisms from anadromous fish, as can be seen from the introductory part of patent claims 1 and 8 respectively.
Bakgrunn Background
Salmon louse is a crustacean that lives as a marine parasite on salmon fish. Salmon lice feed on the mucus, skin and blood of the fish and consequently take nourishment from the fish. It also causes wounds to the fish which can cause infections and problems with the salt balance.
Salmon lice are found on fish in farms and on wild salmon and sea trout. When the fish enter the fjords to spawn in rivers, the lice follow but fall off when they come into contact with fresh water in the rivers.
Tilsvarende gjelder for havbruksnæringen i bl.a. Chile, Scotland, Færøyene og Irland. Norway has a large aquaculture industry with an increasing number of fish in the sea, which in turn increases the number of hosts for salmon lice. Efforts are therefore made to keep the level of salmon lice in the farms as low as possible. The same applies to the aquaculture industry in i.a. Chile, Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Ireland.
A number of attempts have been made to keep the level of salmon lice in check. One alternative is the addition of chemicals to inhibit the synthesis of chitin in salmon lice and thus stop shell change. Another option is preventive medication, but this has led to increased resistance in salmon lice and the release of medicines and chemicals into the environment. This typically applies to hydrogen peroxide (H202). Another approach has been the use of wrasse that eat salmon lice on the farmed fish.
It is known that farms located in fjords with large freshwater runoff have traditionally had little salmon lice and that in periods of reduced freshwater supply due to drought, these have experienced increased levels of salmon lice. Experiments have also been carried out with the use of a well boat where fish were transferred from cages to fresh water in the well boat to expose fish for a period to remove salmon lice. In a commercial application, however, such an approach requires the use of a well boat in addition to a source of fresh water.
NO 333846 Bl describes a treatment container for treating fish in aquaculture facilities. The container is supplied with water from a reverse osmosis system. The use of a tarpaulin that covers the upper part of the cage in order to create an upper water layer with lower salinity is also described.
It should be mentioned that there are other parasites and microorganisms that are also relevant in the context of the present invention, for example Neoparamoeba perurans. This parasite is the cause of amoebic gill disease (AGD) in marine fish, which can lead to reduced performance and high mortality. This parasite can also be removed by treating the fish with fresh water. However, the farming industry has still not found permanently effective methods to combat parasites.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a method and device for releasing such parasites and microorganisms from anadromous fish in open breeding cages in the sea, in order to reduce mortality and reduce costs for combating salmon lice and AGD.

Generell beskrivelse General description
The invention is based on the task of removing parasites and microorganisms from anadromous fish, where the fish is transferred from its natural aquatic environment to an aquatic environment with fresh water and exposed to the fresh water for a specific period of time.
According to the present invention, a method is prescribed which includes the steps of: a) leading the fish from its natural water environment to a first container containing water with a first salinity, and keeping the fish in the first container for a first period of time, b) transferring the fish from the first container to a second container of water with a second salinity different from said first salinity, and keeping the fish in the second container in a second
tidsrom, time span,
c) å valgfritt gjenta trinn b) foran en eller flere ganger, og c) to optionally repeat step b) above one or more times, and
d) å lede fisken tilbake til sitt naturlige vannmiljø. d) to return the fish to their natural aquatic environment.
I én utførelse tilføres første beholderen ferskvann (permeat) fra et anlegg for produksjon av In one embodiment, the first container is supplied with fresh water (permeate) from a plant for the production of
ferskvann fra sjøvann ved omvendt osmose (RO-anlegg), mens andre beholderen tilføres saltlake (konsentrat) fra RO-anlegget. fresh water from seawater by reverse osmosis (RO plant), while the second container is supplied with brine (concentrate) from the RO plant.
In another embodiment, the first container is supplied with the concentrate from the RO plant, while the second container is supplied with the permeate from the RO plant.
The fish are transferred between the natural aquatic environment, for example a breeding pen, and the first container and/or the second container, and between the containers, by means of a fish pump.
The fish's residence time (first and/or second period) in the respective containers will vary due to various factors and the desired degree of removal of parasites and microorganisms, and lasts for example from 1 to 10 hours, especially 4-7 hours.
The invention also provides a device for removing parasites and microorganisms sensitive to fresh water from anadromous fish.
I henhold til oppfinnelsen omfatter anordningen: According to the invention, the device includes:
- i det minste én første beholder for vann med en første salinitet, - at least one first container for water with a first salinity,
- i det minste én andre beholder for vann med en andre salinitet, - at least one second container for water with a second salinity,
- midler for å transportere fisk mellom fiskens naturlige vannmiljøog den første beholderen, mellom den første beholderen og den andre beholderen, og mellom den andre beholderen og fiskens naturlige vannmiljø, og - et apparat for produksjon av ferskvann (permeat) og saltlake (konsentrat) fra sjøvann ved omvendt osmose (OR-anlegg), hvilket apparat oppviser - means for transporting fish between the fish's natural aquatic environment and the first container, between the first container and the second container, and between the second container and the fish's natural aquatic environment, and - an apparatus for producing fresh water (permeate) and brine (concentrate) from seawater by reverse osmosis (OR plant), which device exhibits
o midler for å lede permeatet til den første beholderen og konsentratet den andre o means for directing the permeate to the first container and the concentrate to the second
beholderen, eller the container, or
o midler for å lede permeatet til den andre beholderen og konsentratet til den første beholderen. o means for directing the permeate to the second vessel and the concentrate to the first vessel.
The device can be placed on a well boat, on a raft or on another vessel, where pumps and pipes lead the fish from their natural water environment, for example a breeding pen, to one of the containers and between the containers with different salinity. The device comprises at least two containers, but may optionally have three or more containers for absorbing water with varying salinity. For example, a first container can contain fresh water, a second container brine, a third container freshwater, etc. Alternatively, for example, a third container can contain seawater, a fourth container can contain fresh water, etc. A central aspect of the invention is that fish are kept in one container with water of a first salinity and transferred and held in a subsequent container of water of another salinity different from the first salinity to challenge and stress the osmotic balance of parasites and microorganisms so that they escape from the fish.
The means for transporting fish between the fish's natural aquatic environment and the containers as well as between the containers can be carried out with per se known pipes and pumps for transporting fish. This transport will also help to ensure that parasites and micro-organisms escape from transported fish. The fish can also be subjected to a mechanical treatment known per se, such as water rinsing, to remove parasites and microorganisms before, during or after being in the water containers with mutually different salinity.
In a further embodiment, at least one of said first and second containers is placed at least partially submerged in the sea and supplied with permeate and concentrate respectively from an RO plant. These components can, for example, be arranged at a fleet or a vessel, where the RO plant is placed on board while the containers are fully or partially submerged next to the vessel or fleet.
Detaljert beskrivelse Detailed description
The invention is based on the basic idea that anadromous fish (host) infected with parasites and microorganisms that are sensitive to fresh water are exposed to water with varying salinity in several stages, in order to further stress the osmosis balance of the parasites and microorganisms so that they escape the host.
While the industry has until now used methods of exposing the fish to fresh water for a specific period of time, typically in the order of a few hours, combined with mechanical influence from, among other things, pumps and pipe transport, in order to remove parasites and microorganisms, the present invention prescribes a method and device where anadromous fish are further exposed to water with varying salinity in several stages before the fish are returned to their original aquatic environment in, for example, the rearing pen. These steps of water treatment involve several changes in osmotic pressure which stress the microorganisms even more than known technology does.
In one embodiment, the treatment is carried out by first exposing fish to fresh water for a specific period of time (residence time), such as from 1 to 10 hours, and then exposing it to brine for a specific period of time, such as from 1 to 10 hours, after which the fish is returned to its original aquatic environment, such as seawater in a breeding pen. In the context of the present description, this is referred to as a "treatment sequence".
If necessary, the treatment sequence can be repeated one or more times by re-exposing the fish to fresh water for a specific period of time and then exposing it to brine for a specific period of time, after which the fish is returned to its original aquatic environment.
In a second embodiment, however, the treatment sequence described above can be reversed, in that the fish is first exposed to brine for a specific period of time and then exposed to fresh water for a specific period of time. Similar to the previous embodiment, this reversed treatment sequence can optionally be repeated one or more times before the fish is returned to its original aquatic environment.
The fish's residence time as indicated above will vary with various factors, such as the difference in salinity between seawater and the salinity in the separate steps in the treatment sequences, or how infected the fish is with parasites and microorganisms.
In this context, it must be emphasized that the term "treatment" used here does not refer to any form of therapy or diagnosis. Treatment, on the other hand, refers to an operation or activity that at least partially removes parasites and microorganisms from anadromous fish.
The exact salinity of the water environments is not limiting: an important aspect of the invention is that the difference in salinity between the various water environments in the method according to the invention is sufficient for the parasites and microorganisms to be exposed to osmotic disturbances in several treatment steps.
In another aspect according to the invention, a device for removing parasites and microorganisms sensitive to fresh water from fish has been provided, comprising
i det minste en første beholder for vann med en første salinitet, at least a first container for water with a first salinity,
i det minste en andre beholder for vann med en andre salinitet, at least a second container for water with a second salinity,
midler for å transportere fisk mellom fiskens opprinnelige vannmiljø, slik som en oppdrettsmerd, og den første beholderen, mellom den første beholderen og den andre beholderen, og mellom den andre beholderen og det opprinnelige vannmiljøet, og means for transporting fish between the fish's original aquatic environment, such as a rearing pen, and the first container, between the first container and the second container, and between the second container and the original aquatic environment, and
et apparat for produksjon av ferskvann og saltlake fra sjøvann ved omvendt osmose, til henholdsvis den første beholderen og den andre beholderen eller til henholdsvis den andre beholderen og den første beholderen. an apparatus for the production of fresh water and brine from seawater by reverse osmosis, to the first container and the second container respectively or to the second container and the first container respectively.
According to the invention, the brine from the production of fresh water by reverse osmosis is therefore used in the treatment of anadromous fish to release parasites and microorganisms from the fish, in contrast to known technology which disposes of this brine to the sea without making use of it.
When producing water from a plant based on reverse osmosis ("Reverse Osmosis" - RO), depending on various factors, such as membrane quality, you will be able to produce a permeate (fresh water), for example with a salt content of approximately 0.16 g /l, a concentrate (brine), for example with a salt content of approximately 74 g/l, from seawater with a salt content of approximately 37 g/l. These figures indicate that the plant exemplified above has approximately a 50% yield and can produce, for example, 1 m<3> of fresh water and 1 m<3> of brine from 2 m3 of seawater.
This difference in salinity in permeate and concentrate respectively will be more than sufficient to disturb the osmotic balance for parasites and microorganisms so that they become stressed and free themselves from the host (the fish). On the other hand, anadromous fish will be able to tolerate these variations and levels of salinity as indicated above.
It may be interesting to note that while permeate from an RO plant has a lower pH than seawater, for example approximately pH 6.5, and may require buffering to provide good enough water quality for animal welfare purposes, the concentrate will have approximately same pH value as seawater. The concentrate can thus basically be used in the present procedure without further adjustment of the pH. If the permeate and concentrate are used over a longer period of time, the water's pH value can be reduced due to, among other things, C02 from the fish's respiration.
The device according to the invention can be arranged on board a raft or well boat or another vessel. It can also be permanently located at rearing cages or arranged floating in or outside rearing cages.
For example, a well boat that already has two tanks and an RO plant for the production of fresh water can be modified by adding concentrate from the RO plant to one tank instead of permeate and establishing means to transport fish between the two tanks.
With a raft or equivalent, the device can be realized by placing at least two containers on or next to the raft and arranging means for transferring fish between the sea and the containers and means for transferring fish between respective containers. The containers can be placed on the deck of the fleet, or can be completely or partially submerged in the sea.
