Description

DUAL PLATE CHECK VALVE HÅVING AN INTERCHANGEABLE VALVE SEAT
Fl ELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a dual plate check valve assembly for controlling the direction of flow in a piping system, comprising a pressure retaining enclosure comprising a valve body håving a valve bore and defining a valve seat; a rising stem configured to transversally displace a dise assembly arranged inside the valve body, between a lowered position, wherein the dise assembly may control the flow through the valve bore and a raised position wherein the dise assembly is lifted at least partially clear of the valve bore and the valve seat, and the dise assembly comprising two dise members adapted to engage with the valve seat to control the flow through the valve bore.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A dual plate check valve with rising stem typically comprises a pressure retaining enclosure constituted by a valve body håving a valve bore and defining a valve seat. A dise assembly is displaceable arranged inside the valve body and two dise members of the dise assembly are adapted to engage with the valve seat to control flow through the valve bore. Reference is made to the Norwegian patent application no. 20130357 and PCT application no. SUtSKSttfL describing dual plate checks valve with a rising stem. PCT-EP-lol^-o^AV^ h
Manufacturing of the valve seat and the valve body of a dual plate check valve is complicated by the need for a cross pin dividing the valve bore in two separate ftow paths. The cross pin is constitutes a part of the valve seat necessary for the dise members to be able to provide a sealing effect. Because of the cross pin machining of the valve bore is restricted.
Hence, an improved dual plate check valve which overcomes the above mentioned disadvantages during manufacturing would be advantageous.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
An object of the present invention is to provide a dual plate check valve providing simplified manufacturing, maintenance and hardfacing of the valve seat and the valve body.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Thus, the above described object and several other objects are intended to be obtained in a first aspect of the invention by providing a dual plate check valve assembly for controlling the direction of flow in a piping system, comprising a pressure retaining enclosure comprising a valve body håving a valve bore and defining a valve seat; a rising stem configured to transversally displace a dise assembly arranged inside the valve body, between a lowered position, wherein the dise assembly may control the flow through the valve bore and a raised position wherein the dise assembly is lifted at least partially clear of the valve bore and the valve seat, the dise assembly comprising two dise members adapted to engage with the valve seat to controi the flow through the valve bore, and wherein the valve seat is provided as an interchangeable valve seat part removable arranged in the valve body.
By comprising a removable valve seat the complexity associated with the manufacturing and maintenance of the valve body is considerable reduced.
In one embodiment the interchangeable valve seat may be fixed to the valve body by screws, pins, welding, glue or other suitable methods.
Additionally, the dual plate check valve assembly may comprise comprises sealing members configured for sealing against the valve body to preventing process media from passing between the valve seat and the valve body.
Further surfaces of the interchangeable valve seat may be hardfaced with tungsten carbide, stetlite, Inconel™ or Ultimet™ or other suitable methods. The tungsten carbide may be sprayed onto the valve seat. Also, the stellite may be provided as an overlay welded layer. Other methods for applying materials for hardfacing the valve seat is also envisaged by the skilled person.
In one embodiment of the above mentioned dual plate check valve the valve seat may be machined in a different material than the valve body and the dise assembly. Hereby galling between the valve body and the valve seat is prevented.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
The dual plate check valve comprising an interchangeable valve seat according to the invention will now be described in more detail with regards to the accompanying figures. The figures shows one way of implementing the present invention and is not to be construed as being limiting to other possible embodiments falling within the scope of the attached claim set. Figure 1 shows an exploded view of a rising stem dual plate check valve assembly comprising an interchangeable valve seat, and Figure 2 shows a sectioned view showing the valve dtscs in a position aligned with the valve bore and engaged with the valve seat.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT
The exploded view in Figure 1 shows a dual plate check valve assembly 30 as described more in detail in Norwegian patent application no. 20130357 and PCT application no. SBSBMMfeL PCT - eP2oi>r-
Contrary to what have previously been described, the present dual plate check valve incorporates a valve seat part 50 as a loose separate part instead of håving the seat as an integral part of the body. The valve seat part may be fixed to the body 104 by screws, welding, glue, threads or by other suitable methods.
The valve seat is not an integral part of the body in the dual plate check valve assembly and may thus be machined as a separate part. Hereby manufacturing of the valve seat and the valve body may be simplified by manufacturing the seat as a separate interchangeable part.
Hard facing of the seat is also simplified as this may be done in a operation separate from the manufacturing of the reminder of the valve body. In one embodiment hardfacing is provided by overlay welding thereby applying a layer of a hard alloy such as Inconel™, stellite™, Ultimet™ or other suitable alloys to the surfaces of valve seat part. Hardfacing may also be done by spraying of tungsten carbide or other materials onto the valve seat to increase the wear resistance of the seat.
Further, the seat may also be manufactured from a material different from the valve body and discs, thereby preventing galling between the closure members when the sealing surface on the dise members are sltding against the sealing surface on the valve seat.
Maintenance of the valve is also simplified this way as the seat can easity be replaced after wear and tear during normal use.
When the stem and the dise assembly is operated to the lower position so that the typically D - shaped discs are engaged with the valve seat, the spring member will force the two discs towards the valve seat. In this position, the process media is prevented from passing from the downstream side of the valve to the upstream ide of the valve according to criteria given in typically API 598.
As shown in Fig. 1 sealing members 60 are provided between the valve seat 50 and the valve body 104. The sealing members are shown as a radial O-ring on the figure, but other suitable sealing methods such as quad rings, metaf seals, glands or gaskets can also be used to prevent leakage of process media between the valve body 104 and the valve seat 50. Sealing may also be provided by incorporating machined cones with different angles in respective seat and body, thereby defining a limited contact area between these parts and further compressing the contact area between the valve seat and the vale body so that a metal sealing is created.
Figure 2 shows the dise members 12a, 12b engaged with the valve seat 50 when the rising stem is in the lower position and there is no flow of process media through the valve. The spring member 14 is forcing the dise members 12a, 12b towards the valve seat 50 thereby preventing process media from passing from the downstream side of the valve to the upstream side of the valve.
Although the present invention has been described in connectton with the specified embodiments, it should not be construed as being in any way limited to the presented examptes. The scope of the present invention is set out by the accompanying claim set. In the context of the claims, the terms "comprising" or "comprises" do not exclude other possible elements or steps. Also, the mentioning of references such as<w>a" or<*>an" etc. should not be construed as excluding a plurality. The use of reference signs in the claims with respect to elements indicated in the figures shalt also not be construed as limiting the scope of the invention. Furthermore, individual features mentioned in different claims, may possibty be advantageously combined, and the mentioning of these features in different claims does not exclude that a combination of features is not possible and advantageous.
