Oppfinnelsens område Field of the invention
This invention relates to gripping surfaces. More specifically, the invention relates to a device for regulating the gripping ability of the outer sole of a footwear.
Oppfinnelsens bakgrunn The background of the invention
There are countless examples of means and methods for improving the grip of footwear to reduce the risk associated with walking on sloping and/or slippery surfaces.
The prior art includes US 4,160,331 A which describes a shoe having an outsole with a gripping surface. The grip surface is applied to the outsole in separate, separated bands in channels in the outsole and comprises a mixture of hard particles such as silicon carbide and an adhesive. The grip surface is intended to prevent or limit the user from slipping on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow.
The prior art also includes US 2011/0192054A1 which describes a boot having an outsole with baked-in grip-enhancing studs. Each spike is partially baked into the outer sole's support part and protrudes from the support part.
The prior art also includes CA 2 535 426 A1 which describes an anti-slip fastening device for footwear. The fastening device comprises a plurality of slip-resistant elements positioned between the shoe sole and the surface, and flexible connection used to ensure appropriate positioning of the elements when walking or running.
The prior art also includes WO 2011/028114 A1 which describes a sports shoe having an outsole provided with a grip enhancing structure and a detector arranged to detect the movement of the shoe. The grip enhancing structure is movable between an enhanced grip state and a reduced grip state, as a processor is arranged to move the grip enhancing structure between these states based on detected movements.
The prior art also includes US 2012/0066938 which describes shoe outsoles for athletic shoes or sports shoes with grip caps that can be removed or replaced. The grip capsules hold a supply of a substance that exhibits stickiness to enhance the friction between the outsole and any hard floor. The tack-enhancing substance may be released over time or secreted from within the sole of the shoe onto the lower surface or surfaces of the outsole that contact the smooth, hard playing surface or may be in response to compression or shear forces acting on the sole during play to extend its adhesive properties and reduce slippage.
A disadvantage of known gripping ability-regulating devices for footwear is that the gripping ability-regulating devices are active, i.e. in operation, all the time, even when they are not needed.

Detaljert beskrivelse av en foretrukket utførelsesform Detailed description of a preferred embodiment
Figure 1 shows a boot 1 having an outer sole 2, and the outer sole is provided with protrusions 4 which support the user's weight and provide contact with the ground surface S. The term "outsole" mainly refers to the lower part of the boot, i.e. that part of the sole which comes into contact with the ground when the boot is used. The projection 4 may be in the form of elevations, knobs, etc. arranged in a suitable pattern which is well known in the art. Although the following description uses the term "boot", the invention should not be limited to a boot but generally applies to all footwear.
With reference to Figures 2a and 2b, each protrusion 4 comprises grip-enhancing elements in the form of a "lip" 6 which extends around the periphery of the protrusion (illustrated as dashed lines in Figure 2a). The curved arrows in Figure 2b illustrate how the lips 6 can be bent down and around to the underside of the projection. This is also indicated in Figure 7a-c. The lip is made of an elastic material (such as rubber, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), latex, PVC or any other known outsole material). The lip may be molded together with the projection so that the two form one unitary element, or the lip may be joined (eg glued or vulcanized) to the projection after the projection has been made. Figure 5a, which is a schematic illustration of one projection 4, shows how the lower surface 7 of the lip 6 is level with the surface 8 of the projection contacting the ground, and also how the lip has a width dimension w and a height dimension h. Typical dimensions for w and h may be of the order of 2 mm, but the invention is not limited to any such dimensions. The lip 6 comprises an upper side 12 and a lower side 13. The upper side 12 is mainly not in contact with the ground surface S when the lip is inactive. However, the upper side 12 is at least partially in contact with the ground surface when the lip is bent down and below the projection (figure 5b). Figures 4a and 4b illustrate two possible lip configurations: Figure 4a shows a plurality of separate lip sections 6a arranged at intervals around the protrusion, while Figure 4b indicates how one lip 6b extends along each side of the protrusion. A number of possible lip cross-sections are shown in figure 9. Different protrusion patterns are illustrated in figures 8a and 8b.
Referring again to Figure 5a, this figure illustrates a walking condition where there is no slippage between the outsole (ie each protrusion's ground-contacting surface 8) and the ground surface S. The static friction between the ground-contacting surface 8 and the ground S maintains a stationary (ie non-slip) relationship between the boot and the ground. In this state, the lips 6 are inactive as they do not support the weight of the user and contribute little to the static friction between the outsole and the surface. This is the equilibrium position of the lip, i.e. the position it attains when it is not subjected to external forces or bending moments which cause it to deflect.
In order for the outsole to begin to slide (slip) in relation to the ground, the static frictional force must be overcome by an applied force. The maximum possible frictional force between the surface in contact with the ground and the ground before the boot begins to slide is a product of the static coefficient of friction say either and the normal force.
Dette kan uttrykkes som: This can be expressed as:
Figurer 3b og 3 c illustrerer en nedadskrånende bakke og en oppoverbakke, hvor fremspringet 4 begynner å bevege seg nedover (pil M) og aktiverer dermed den "fremre" leppen 6, dvs. leppen som vender mot bevegelsesretningen (M). where: f=the maximum possible frictional force between the surface 8 that comes into contact with the ground and the ground S; us=the static coefficient of friction (empirically determined) Fn=the normal force The invention is based on the fact that the friction exerted by the lips 6 when deflected and bent down under the projection acts in a direction opposite to the movement of the boot (i.e. the outer sole and the projection 4) . This is illustrated in Figure 5b. Here the projection 4 has begun to slide (indicated by the arrow M) whereupon the lip 6 is forced down and folded under the surface 8 which comes into contact with the ground. The movement M is induced by a force component in the positive or negative x-direction, and this x-force component can be due to accelerations in the x-direction and/or a sloping surface (uphill or downhill). Figures 3a similarly show a static situation on a flat surface where the lips 6 are not activated. Figures 3b and 3c illustrate a downward-sloping hill and an uphill, where the projection 4 begins to move downwards (arrow M) and thus activates the "front" lip 6, i.e. the lip facing the direction of movement (M).
A basic principle behind the invention is that the lips 6 are activated when the projection 4 starts to slide.
Figure 6 illustrates a variant where the projection 4' comprises a groove 9. This reinforces the lip activation by the groove allowing an initial rotation of the part of the projection where the lip is attached. The transition between the projection and the lip preferably has a radius R2 to avoid stress and strain concentrations and material shortages. Figure 6 also shows how the lip can conveniently be equipped with a mushroom-shaped outer part 10, and that the lip's upper side 12 can comprise a friction material 11 which will come into contact with the ground when the lip is activated.
Modifications and/or additions can be made to the elements described so far, but these must remain within the scope and scope of the invention.
Although the invention has been described with reference to a projection 4 having a rectangular cross-section as shown in Figures 4a and 4b, it should be understood that the invention is equally applicable to projections having non-rectangular cross-sections, e.g. as shown in Figure 2. Circular, elliptical and polygonal cross-sections etc. are other examples of non-rectangular cross-sections. Examples of such cross-sections are shown in Figures 8a and 8b.
