The intermediate chambers have either an open bottom or closed container structure. The chambers may further include an auxiliary buoyancy material designed to either mix with or contain pressurized fluids injected into the chambers. The self-contained riser system further includes a lower riser assembly attached to a primary wellbore fixture. The system also includes an upper riser assembly and one or more additional buoyancy chambers arranged in either direct or indirect communication with each other, as well as with drilling, production and exploration drilling equipment as required by the associated operations.
