The locking member (64) provides as much as complete peripheral support in the locked position and, when released, can be prevented from re-gripping the previously connected members. Explanatory examples of the radial release mechanism for release include sleeves that expand and radially oriented pistons (78). Shear bolts or flanges are not used to hold the components together in the preferred embodiment. Internal pressure fluctuations prior to initiating the release sequence will not cause unwanted release. The mechanism is applicable to many well tools and is illustrated in connection with a hydraulic release.
