Abstract

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for monitoring a sed patient, in particular to provide output signals indicating the state of alertness and pain in the patient. The method comprises the steps of providing a conductivity signal measured at a region of the patient's skin, recognizing an activity in a high frequency range of said measurement signal, and establishing a state of pain in the patient by recognizing said activity. The recognition can be performed by analyzing the output of a high pass filter or by analyzing the results of the outputs of two different low pass filters, followed by a logical operation. The assays can either be performed by a frequency spectrum method, using the amplitude of a spectrum center of gravity as an indication of a recognized activity, or by a time domain method where the number of valid peaks and bottoms in the skin conductivity signal is counted through the measurement range.
