Abstract

Den foreliggende oppfinnelsen vedrører et integrert nettverkselement og tidsserver for distribusjon av tidsinformasjon i et datamaskinnettverk. Nettverkselementet omfatter midler for å rute datapakker mellom kommunikasjonsporter, såvel som en lokal klokke og midler for å generere tidsoppdateringsforespørselspakker og tidsoppdaterings- svarpakker. Den tette integrasjon av kommunikasjonstjenester og tidstjenester setter det integrerte nettverkselementet og tidsserver i stand til å distribuere tidsoppdateringsinformasjon samtidig med at unøyaktigheter som resulterer fra svitsjing eller rutingsoperasjoner unngås. Det er også beskrevet en fremgangsmåte for å synkronisere de lokale klokker for noder i et kommunikasjonsnettverk, som benytter seg av egenskapene for det integrerte nettverkselement og tidsserver. Fremgangsmåten tilveiebringer automatisk konfigurering av en tidsoppdateringsstruktur i nettverket, slik at tidsoppdateringsinformasjonen distribueres fra en eller flere master-tidsservere, med integrerte nettverkselementer og tidsservere virkende som slave-tidsservere som sender tidsoppdateringsinformasjonen videre gjennom nettverket.
