Description
This invention relates to an electric heating device for mounting outside and in good heat-transferring contact with a valve/manifold unit in connection with a flow meter for hydrocarbons, particularly in explosive areas.
This is in particular a heating device in an explosion-proof design for use when heating measuring manifolds in industry and offshore installations.
Several different designs of heating devices are known and used for this rather special purpose. Nowadays, heating devices of the type rib heaters are mostly used for air heating. These are mounted in large enclosures that enclose both the heating device and the manifold. The weight is relatively high, and the power consumption is large (150-500W).
There is, however, a newer type of heating unit that is used in some installations. This is a cylindrical design ("Penheater") of 25W which is inserted into a machined hole in the manifold.
Two other heating methods are also known, namely based on so-called "heattracing" (heating cable wrapped around the manifold) and so-called "steamtracing" (copper tubes wrapped around the manifold and with a stream of hot liquid flowing through them), but these methods are unwanted by the users because of. lack of service-friendliness.
Det Experience has shown that these known types of heating units and methods are not good enough in practice. The first-mentioned rib heater does not keep the temperature up if the cover or enclosure around the manifold is opened. The
Betjeningsproblemer er også til stede, da ventilene som er montert på manifolden vokser/fryser og det vil dermed være fare for forskyvning av korrekte målepunkter. in many cases there is a risk that the oil medium in the measuring equipment thickens (grows), and a significant amount of heat is needed to remove this later. Such waxing causes large measurement errors. This waxing can also occur at somewhat lower temperatures where the fin heater is unable to keep the temperature up, despite the high power. Operating problems are also present, as the valves mounted on the manifold grow/freeze and there will thus be a risk of displacement of correct measuring points.
The cylindrical "Penheater" is only a heating element that heats the manifold directly, but here too problems arise, as the manifold heats up so much that the temperature can cause corrosion damage, and therefore an external temperature regulation is required, which increases the cost and complicates the assembly, service and use -area. The regulator, which is required, is only supplied in two voltage ranges and is designed for a specific frequency. This type of heating element cannot be dismantled with voltage connected, as the surface temperature of the heating element exceeds the permitted maximum temperature of 85 °C (Ex-zone T6). Furthermore, this type can only be used on certain constructions of manifolds, as holes must be drilled for assembly and most manifolds are already pierced with channels for valves and inlet/outlet.
In the case of the directly mounted manifold or valve heating device according to the invention, the mentioned problems with known designs are substantially eliminated by the fact that it is mounted directly outside the manifold in existing mounting holes on it, it has its own temperature adjustment so that overheating does not occur, the heat release is large enough to to be able to maintain the temperature even if the enclosure around the manifold is opened and the ambient temperature is extremely low, and the manifold temperature is so high that valve waxing/freezing does not occur. This is achieved with a combination of features which are specified in more detail in the patent claims.
The direct-mounted valve heater specified here has further advantages such as low weight, considerably reduced encapsulation costs, low power consumption, easy connection, adaptability to all voltage ranges and ease of service, as the maximum temperature is not exceeded when disassembling with voltage connected.
The good results achieved with the heating device according to the invention are due, among other things, to that the heat radiation and the heat conduction are concentrated to the exposed parts of the manifold, as the heating element itself is isolated from the surroundings. Metal or steel casing serves as both a mounting bracket and a heat conductor, and an outer casing made of UV-approved, heat-resistant plastic material is also used. The heating element is cast in heat-conducting molding compound (epoxy), and is regulated by two temperature regulators or sensors, where one monitors the manifold temperature and the other monitors the temperature of the heating element. Furthermore, the device is preferably secured with two thermal fuses and an external overload fuse. Since only resistive and mechanical components are included in this heating device, it is not sensitive to frequency differences and possible voltage ranges (e.g. AC, 12-240V/DC, 12-48V) are only determined by heating element ets and over- the load protection value.
1 viser en typisk ventil/manifold-enhet påmontert en A representative example of a practical embodiment of the heating device according to the invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the drawings, where: fig. 1 shows a typical valve/manifold assembly mounted on a

fig. 4 shows, in principle, an electrical connection core for the product device in fig. 2 and 3.
In that in fig. The arrangement shown in 1 includes a valve or manifold unit 2 with associated operating handle etc. Necessary connections of pipe connections etc. is not shown. The unit 2 can in practice be designed with more or less flat surfaces that form a right angle with each other. On a main surface, this valve/manifold unit 2 is fitted with a heating device in an embodiment according to the invention, as shown in fig. 1 is indicated by its general enclosure 1 and four mounting ears or flanges 4. These fastening means can cooperate with mounting holes 5, which normally occur on such valve/manifold units, by means of bolts. Furthermore, a supply cable 3 for the power supply to the heating device is shown.
As shown in more detail in fig. 2 and 3, the walls of the enclosure 1 are composed of a layer IA of metal, preferably steel, and an outer layer IB of halogen-free and flame-resistant plastic material, which is preferably of a UV-approved type. Fastening means in the form of four lugs 4 are preferably arranged in good heat-conducting contact with the metal casing IA, and may possibly be integral parts thereof. The plastic casing or coating IB immediately joins the outer side of the metal or steel casing IA.
As can be seen, the enclosure 1 is generally box-shaped, and has an open side 1C which faces upwards in fig. 3, and which is designed to rest against the manifold unit 2 when the heating device is mounted on it. The device is thus mounted directly on the outside of the manifold 2, without any machining of this being necessary before mounting. In this connection, it is an advantage that the well heat-conducting lugs or fastening means 4 lie flush with a contact surface ID that the heating device has at the aforementioned open side 1C.
In this example, three electric heating elements 6 are shown placed side by side (see fig. 2) relatively close to the enclosure's open side 1C (see fig. 3). This location provides a good release of heat to the manifold 2 through the contact surface ID. The elements 6 can e.g. consist of power resistors of 9W of a known type per se.
At approximately the same level in relation to the open side 1C as the heating elements 6, a temperature sensor 7 is arranged for temperature regulation of the manifold 2. This location primarily serves to achieve the best possible heat contact with the adjacent surface of the manifold 2. If possible to ensure a distance between the heating elements and the sensor 7, there is also less direct heat influence on it. The heating elements 6, the temperature sensor 7 and other components which will be discussed in the following can all be advantageously mounted on a circuit board 10 which is placed at the bottom of the enclosure 1, as shown in fig. 3, i.e. at the enclosure's opposite side 1F in relation to the aforementioned, open side 1C.
A relatively well heat-conducting molding compound 11 is filled in the enclosure 1, as shown in fig. 3. As can be seen from fig. 3, the circuit board 10 is also embedded in this molding compound 11, which is further filled into the enclosure 1 all the way to the open side 1C, to form the aforementioned contact surface ID. Consequently, this molding compound 11 will enclose the heating elements 6 and the temperature sensor element 7.
As a further preferred component in this heating device, another temperature sensor element 9 is arranged, preferably in direct heat contact with the underside of the heating elements 6, with the aim of monitoring the temperature of the heating elements. It appears from fig. 3 that this heat sensor 9 is enclosed by the heat-conducting molding compound 11, which is favorable for the heat contact with the heating elements 6.
Videre viser fig. Furthermore, fig. 3 a thermal fuse 8 placed on the circuit board 10 for protection against overheating of the heating elements 6. As can be seen from fig. 4, two such thermal fuses 8 can be arranged in series, and these are advantageously enclosed by the heat-conducting molding compound 11.
The form in fig. 4 shows a parallel connection of the three heating elements 6, each of which has a resistance value R, as these connected heating elements are arranged electrically in series with the thermal fuses 8, the first temperature sensor 7 and the second temperature sensor 9. These sensor elements can preferably of the bimetallic type. During normal operation, current will flow across the bimetal contacts in both sensor elements 7 and 9.
When voltage U is connected to the supply cable 3, a current will flow in the network in fig. 4, where the current will first pass the two series-connected thermal fuses 8, and will further pass through the temperature sensor 7 and the sensor 9, and then flow through the heating elements in the form of power resistors 6, where the current causes a release of heat. If one of the sensors 7 or 9, possibly the fuses 8, should be tripped, this causes a break in the current circuit and thus a stop in the development of heat in the heating elements 6, which are thus cooled. The bimetal sensors 7 and 9 will be set with appropriate set points, and in the event of a temperature drop of e.g. 10°C from upper set points, the bimetallic contacts are re-connected. The set points can be specified by the relevant user before ordering the heating device. With the arrangement described here in the heating device according to the invention, the heat regulation by means of the sensors 7 and 9 will be completely integrated into the heating device. This regulation thus involves temperature regulation both with regard to the manifold 2 and with regard to the heating elements 6.
The thermal fuses 8 represent a protection against overheating, and will therefore not be reconnected if they were to be triggered.
The entire construction of the heating device described here within the enclosure 1 is compact and reliable, while the weight can be kept very low in practice, e.g. of around 250 grams. It is simple and convenient to mount this heating device on a normal valve/manifold unit 2, as shown in fig. 1, preferably with contact against a mainly flat surface part of this, the heating device's contact surface ID preferably being essentially flat. The fastening ears 4 are also preferably located in the same plane. It is clear, however, that the heating device according to the invention does not necessarily need to be based on flat surfaces and a box-like shape, as illustrated in the drawing.
