Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører boref luidpreparater for anvendelse i brønnboringer som traverserer underjordiske formasjoner. The present invention relates to drilling fluid preparations for use in well bores that traverse underground formations.
Drilling fluids, or drilling mud as it is typically referred to in the industry, are used when drilling oil, gas or water wells to transport cuttings to the surface of the well, to control formation pressure, to maintain stability in unlined parts of the borehole, to protect productive formations, and cool and lubricate the drill bits and drill string. Accordingly, a drilling fluid must have certain properties, i.e., low fluid loss or filtration control, solids suspending ability, scale inhibition, shear insensitivity, thermal stability, pseudoplasticity, and polyvalent cation tolerance.
Although it has previously been proposed to use guar and its derivatives as additives in drilling fluids, they have so far not been used to a significant extent as such drilling fluids show a tendency to flocculate the clay and solids, and are not biostable, and furthermore are thermally stable only at low temperatures, e.g. 66° C or lower. Accordingly, the use of drilling fluids containing guar or guarderi vats has been limited to shallow wells, mainly in drilling fluids for non-circulating systems where the spent mud is immediately disposed of in a mud tank after reaching the surface of the well.
Videre har tidligere kjent teknikk ikke beskrevet eller foreslått anvendelsen av en karboksymetylguar, og absolutt ikke en karboksymetylguar som har en kritisk substitusjonsgrad (D.S.-degree of substitution), i kombinasjon med et vandig medium som et boref luid for høytemperaturanvendelser, dvs. ved temperaturer større enn 66° C. Furthermore, the prior art has not described or proposed the use of a carboxymethyl guar, and certainly not a carboxymethyl guar having a critical degree of substitution (D.S. degree of substitution), in combination with an aqueous medium such as a drilling fluid for high temperature applications, i.e. at temperatures greater than 66° C.
The present invention provides a drilling fluid preparation which is characterized in that it essentially consists of (a) an aqueous medium selected from the group consisting of fresh water and tap water, natural and synthetic seawater, and natural and synthetic salt water solution; and (b) a carboxymethyl guar having a D.S. value of from 0.1 to 0.4, wherein the carboxymethyl guar has an Ubbelohde reduced specific viscosity in 2 wt% KC1 of greater than 10.
It is highly unexpected that a drilling fluid preparation is thereby obtained which can withstand environments with calcium and high ionic strength at elevated temperatures up to 93° C, and which has good rheological and fluid loss properties, shows excellent clay and scale formation inhibition, and which shows no indication of flocculation or gelation of the clay or the active drilling solids. Preferably D.S. for carboxymethyl from 0.25 to 0.4, most preferably from 0.25 to 0.36. The carboxymethyl guar has an Ubbelohde reduced specific viscosity (RSV), i.e. specific viscosity divided by the polymer concentration (0.05 g/dl) in 2 wt # KC1 of greater than 10, preferably greater than 18, most preferably greater than 20 until the 26th.
I en annen utførelse av oppfinnelsen gir borefluidpreparatet ifølge oppfinnelsen forbedret termisk stabilitet opptil minst 135 "C ved tilsats av et vannoppløselig metallkarbonat eller In another embodiment of the invention, the drilling fluid preparation according to the invention provides improved thermal stability up to at least 135 "C by adding a water-soluble metal carbonate or
-bicarbonate, such as potassium or sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, alone in an aqueous medium selected from the group consisting of fresh water or tap water, natural and synthetic seawater, and natural and synthetic saline solution, or in combination with a polyvalent metal salt that is not a carbonate in fresh water. Polyvalent metal salt which is not a carbonate, as the term is used in the present description, means a polyvalent metal salt which is not a polyvalent metal carbonate or bicarbonate. Suitable polyvalent metals include magnesium, calcium, aluminum or iron and suitable polyvalent metal salts include chloride and bromide. Typically, the water-soluble metal carbonate or bicarbonate is present in an amount of from 2.85 kg/m<3> to 57.10 kg/m<3>, preferably from 2.83 kg/m<3> to 28.53 kg/ m<3>, most preferably from 8.56 kg/m<3> to 28.53 kg/m<3>. The non-carbonate polyvalent metal salt is preferably present in an amount of from 2.85 kg/m<3> to 14.26 kg/m<3>, preferably from 2.85 kg/m<3> to 11.41 kg /m<3>. The D.S. value for the carboxymethyl guar is critical for the production of the drilling fluids according to the present invention. D. S. is the average number of carboxymethyl groups per anhydro sugar unit in the guar gum. When e.g. The D.S. value of carboxymethylguar is greater than 0.4, the scale inhibition properties are adversely affected and the tolerance to multivalent ionic environments, such as calcium tolerance, is reduced. When the D.S. value of the carboxymethyl guar is less than 0.1, the yield strength, apparent viscosity, scaling inhibition and fluid loss properties are adversely affected.
Carboxymethyl guar is produced from guar gum which is derived from the seed of the guar plant, Cyamopsis tetragonolobus, family Leguminosae. Guar gum is commercially available.
Carboxymethylguar is produced by any known method for the production of sodium carboxymethylcellulose, except that guar flour is used instead of cellulose. Typically, CM guar is prepared by adding a 5056 aqueous caustic solution containing 1.2 moles of caustic compound, e.g. an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, to guar flour in the presence of a diluent such as isopropyl alcohol, t-butyl alcohol and acetone, and stirring until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, and then adding 0.5 moles of monochloroacetic acid per mole of anhydro-sugar unit in the guar molecule of the reaction mixture, heating to 60-80° C, preferably approx. 70°C, and maintaining this temperature for 1 to 5 hours, preferably approx. 2 hours, extraction of the product, if necessary, purification by any conventional method and drying.
