Description
The present invention relates to a tying device as stated in the preamble to the subsequent claim 1. The tying device is particularly intended for tying together a group of cables, pipes or similar parts.
There are known devices of this type where the end of the tape is passed under a bridge, bent back over the bridge and then held down by means of a pair of ears which are bent over the tape by the person performing the tying operation. SE 84 327 can be mentioned as an example. Such devices have several disadvantages in that the work of bending down the ears to hold the band must be carried out at the same time as the band is applied, which is time-consuming and may necessitate a special tool. Furthermore, the device is generally coated with a corrosion-resistant material, e.g. plastic material or enamel, and the bend may break this surface-protective material in the area of the bend line. The device is then exposed to rust or corrosive materials. A further disadvantage occurs when it is desired to open the binding either to introduce or remove objects, after which the binding must be reattached. Repeated bending of the ears, first one way and then the other, will cause a zone of weakness at the bend line and fracture can be expected.
In an attempt to overcome these problems with folding ears, in British published patent application 2 117 821A a binding device is proposed in which the ears are bent during manufacture so that no further bending is necessary during use of the binding device. However, in order for the band to be inserted under the ears, the bent parts are separated by a slot through which the band can be inserted laterally and each ear is bent over sufficiently far that the band enters completely under the ear before it is passed laterally in the opposite direction to center it below the pair of ears. Inserting the tape under the ears is a fairly difficult operation that takes no less time than that involved in bending the ears. Furthermore, the ears must be arranged at a distance from the bridge that is sufficient so that the band, which can be made of a relatively torsion-resistant material such as metal, can be pryed into place. This distance requires the use of more material for the locking part of the binding device, as does the mutual distance between the ears which is necessitated by the insertion surgery. The increased size of the locking device not only means wasting the material and thereby increasing costs, but can also mean that the binding becomes unattractive.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide a binding device which is not affected by any of the above-mentioned disadvantages and which can be used on an object or objects without much effort. This purpose is achieved by a binding device of the type indicated at the outset, with the new and distinctive features indicated in the characteristics of the subsequent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are indicated in the other subsequent claims.
Embodiments of the present invention are described in more detail below in the form of examples and with reference to the accompanying drawings, where: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a binding device according to the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the binding device, Figure 3 is a perspective view of a third embodiment of the binding device, Figure 4 is a perspective view of a fourth embodiment of the binding device, and Figure 5 is a perspective view of only one end of a fifth embodiment of the binding device.
The binding device according to each embodiment comprises a metal band 1 whose length is determined by the size of an object or objects to be tied, and a locking device 2 which is attached to one end of the band 1. The opposite end of the band 1 is rounded to make it easier to perform a locking step after the tying operation and is designed with two holes 3. The band 1 is attached to the locking device 2 by suitable spot welds 4. Both the band and the locking device are made of metal, e.g. steel, and preferably provided with a protective coating of plastic material or enamel.
When using the tying device, the tape is passed around the object or objects to be tied and the free end is passed between a pair of ears 5 and under a bridge 6. When the desired degree of tightening has been achieved by pulling the tape through the bridge, the tape is bent back on itself over the bridge 6 and back between the ears 5.
In Figures 1 to 4, the ears 5 are designed with their free ends bent towards each other at least at a right angle to thereby form the ear's 5 blocking means. The bending angle is preferably greater than a straight angle so that the outward facing sides of the rafters are inclined to facilitate the introduction of the band. The slanted surfaces combined with a certain springy deformability of the ears' material make it possible to push the band past the latches which then hold the band in place. Both guides of the band through the ears 5 can thus take place by simple snap fitting.
The arrangement shown in Figure 5 is generally similar to the arrangement in Figure 1, except for the ears 5. In Figure 5, the free ends 5' of the ears 5 are bent upwards and away from each other. The same general arrangement of the ears can of course also be used in the embodiments in Figures 3 and 4 instead of the arrangements shown there. In the arrangement according to Figure 5, the opposite angular surfaces of the free ends 5' serve as a guide for inserting the tape.
The embodiments according to this invention are all based on the principle described above, but they differ in terms of the construction of the locking device 2.
Figure 1 (as well as Figure 5) shows a locking device comprising a plate 7 from which the bridge 6 is formed by punching upwards (as seen in Figure 1) of a part of the plate 7 bounded by two slots that extend over a central part of the plate in a direction transverse to the tape's feed direction. The plate 7 is preferably deformed in a downward direction (as seen in figure 1) at least in the area of the bridge 6 and possibly over the entire conveyor path of the belt. The ears 5 are also formed by punching upwards or otherwise bending the material in the plate 7 at its two end edge parts.
Figure 2 shows another embodiment where the locking device also comprises a plate 7 from which a bridge 6 is formed in the same way, but where the ears 5 are formed by punching or otherwise bending the plate material at two inner zones that are located at a distance from each other in the tape's feed direction. This construction enables a narrower design of the plate 7 than with the embodiment in Figure 1, but necessitates a longer plate. Figure 3 shows an embodiment where the material of the plate 7 is folded back on itself so that the plate 7 has roughly the same width as the band 1, but in other respects is similar to the embodiments shown in Figure 1. Of course, the plate 7 in the embodiment shown in Figure 2 could be folded in the same way to form a further variant. Figure 4 shows another embodiment without any plate. The bridge 6 is a metal hoop which is attached directly to the band at a point near its end and the ears 5 are formed from a U-shaped metal strip with the ends of the arms shaped like latches and the bottom of the U attached to the band at or near its end. This design clearly requires less material than the previous designs, but the assembly costs are somewhat higher. If desired, the ears can be formed from two L-shaped metal bands, in each of which one arm will form the ear and the other will be attached to the band. In this case, the ears can be located directly opposite each other or they can be arranged at a distance from each other in the direction of the belt's advance.
The invention is described above in connection with barriers which are designed by bending the free ends of the ears. However, the barriers can be designed in a different way, e.g. by thickening of the material in the ears or by inward or outward bending of an intermediate part of the ear.
