Description
The present invention relates to a cathode for use in an electrolytic cell for treating mineral ores and concentrates, as well as a method for producing such a cathode.
The electrolytic cell is of particular importance in the extraction of copper from copper-containing ores and concentrates as described in US patent 4,061,552 and the extraction of lead from lead-containing ores and concentrates as described in US patents 4,148,698 and 4,381,225.
In these processes, not only electrodes and electrolyte are involved, but also two batches of solids, the metal-containing ore or concentrate and the special metal product. In order to achieve a maximization of the reaction with a resulting high yield, it has previously been believed that the anode and cathode should be in a close, parallel relationship. Illustrative of this general assumption is Australian patent 292,235 where considerable emphasis is placed on a construction which preserves a parallel relationship.
Also typical of the conventional electrolytic cell is the use of membrane bags that surround the cathode. Several membrane bags are used to keep the slurry away from the cathodes when pure metal is to be deposited. Some problems encountered in the operation of such cells include: 1) Clogging of membrane materials with particles when high hydraulic gradients must be used in the cell to maintain uniform agitation of the slurry. 2) Difficulties in maintaining large areas of fabric material in parallel planes without distortion, which is particularly increased by high hydraulic gradients in the cell. In most cases, it is undesirable for the fabric material to come into contact with the electrodes. 3) The energy requirements resulting from the necessity for agitation at the bottom of the cell to maintain proper suspension of the mineral between the bags.
Andre problemer omfatter: Other problems include:
Difficulties in extracting the metal powder if it falls from the electrodes onto the cell floor or into the bags, or difficulties and costs in removing and stripping the electrodes if the particulate metal material is strongly adherent.
In order to overcome these problems, it has been known to introduce additives into the polyelectrolyte which inhibit the growth of metal powder particles on the cathode. Furthermore, many attempts have been made to provide a simple and efficient extraction of metal powder. However, precisely the construction with a parallel cathode relationship complicates recovery. In particular, it has not previously been possible to integrate a central extraction system, especially with membrane cells, without complex ear net and flushing techniques.
The present invention aims to reduce these disadvantages when extracting deposited product.
According to the present invention, there is thus provided a cathode for use in an electrolytic cell for extracting metal from mineral ores or concentrates, characterized in that it includes:
(i) en rørformet eller stavformet ledende del, og (i) a tubular or rod-shaped conductive part, and
(ii) a non-conductive coating overlying a portion of said conductive part, wherein the non-conductive coating comprises a perforated tube element formed of heat-shrinkable plastic material that is heat-shrunk around the cathode so that only areas of the cathode located under perforations are exposed in the non-conductive coating.
Katoden kan være en kobberkatode. The cathode may be a copper cathode.
Videre er det ifølge oppfinnelsen tilveiebragt en fremgangsmåte for fremstilling av en katode for bruk i en elektrolytisk celle for uvinning av metall fra mineralmalmer eller Furthermore, according to the invention, a method is provided for the production of a cathode for use in an electrolytic cell for the extraction of metal from mineral ores or
—concentrates, and this method is characterized by: (i) providing a conductive, elongated rod or tube-shaped element, (ii) bringing the elongated conductive element into contact with a perforated, tubular, non-conductive coating formed by heat-shrinkable plastic, and (iii) heat-shrinks the non-conductive coating so as to leave exposed only such areas of the conductive element as lie below perforations in the non-conductive coating.
The invention is illustrated schematically by way of example with reference to the accompanying figure showing an electrode coated according to the invention.
The figure shows the surface of an electrode 1 in the form of a cathode for depositing electrolysis product in an easily dissolvable form in an electrolytic cell for treating ores and concentrates to remove product in the form of metal powder, the cell containing a number of electrodes.
A conductive cathode 19 is partially coated with a non-conductive material 20 which allows the product to grow from the electrode 19 only in certain areas 21. One of the most suitable methods of achieving this effect is by covering the rod or tube electrode, which is usually made of copper, with a perforated shrink plastic tube or - plastic mesh. The plastic tube or mesh is then heated and shrinks onto the rod or tube. This causes the product to grow out of the electrode in small, discrete forms which allow it to be easily detached from the electrode (in some cases aided by a periodic vibration of the electrode) and easily pumped as a slurry.
The above describes the advantages of the cathode construction. The following data shows a chemical effect achieved with such an electrode in an electrolytic cell.
Eksempel Example
40 kg of a copper concentrate which on analysis shows 23% copper and 23.2% iron was added to a cell containing 1500 liters of electrolyte with 35 g/l copper (total ionic Cu), 6.4 g/l cupric and 0 .5 g/l iron. The mixture was aerated using 135 liters of air per minute, and current was passed to the extent of 700 amp. with a voltage of 1.0 V. The cathodes were gently tapped every 15-30 min., and a slight vibration was given to move down the arms down to the sloping bottom of the middle container. From the lowest point in this vessel the copper powder was removed, in slurry form, through a vertical pipe, as required, to a sedimentation chamber where the copper powder separated from the electrolyte which was then conveyed to a centrifugal pump for return to the cell. The pH value of the mixture in the analyte compartment remained between 2.2 and 3.0 throughout the experiment, and could be varied somewhat by adjusting the amount of air to the cell. A decrease in the amount of air admitted into the cell could lower the pH to the preferred pE range of 2.0-2.5. After 10 hours of operation, the air and current were shut off, and the slurry was filtered, and the filter cake was washed and dried. The filter cake showed on analysis 0.8$ copper and 24# iron, which gives a recovery of 97% of the copper from the mineral with an electrolysis power consumption of approximately 0.75 KWH per kg. manufactured copper. The sulfur in the copper pyrites concentrate was almost completely converted into elemental form, and the iron was converted into an oxide, remaining substantially in the residue. This example illustrates the single-step conversion of the copper concentrate to high-purity metal and elemental sulfur by avoiding atmospheric pollution with sulfur dioxide and using very low energy at atmospheric pressure and moderate temperatures.
The use of perforated heat-shrinkable plastic material on cathode rods or tubes represents a cheap and effective means of causing electrolytically deposited metals, often in the form of powders, to grow out of the metal holes in the shrinkable plastic material at the cathode surface to form "trees" that have a high voltage concentration at the cathode surface. This makes it very easy to cause the metal to separate from the cathode surface for collection. E.g. a slight vibration effect on the cathode rods or tubes will cause the deposited metal to separate from the cathode surface. It is difficult to produce the effect with weak sheets because perforated flat sheets of plastic material tend to lift off a flat sheet while tubular shrink plastic material tends to stick tightly around rod-like or tubular surfaces.
