Description
This invention relates to a pipeline designed for the transport of hydrocarbons, in particular untreated well flow, and comprising a composite pipe, a heat-insulating layer, a weight coating and a heating device consisting of heating wires/cables.
The development and production of hydrocarbons at sea is expensive with today's conventional methods. As production moves towards ever greater sea depths, costs increase sharply. Development is therefore moving away from large and expensive surface installations and towards underwater installations. However, untreated well flow cannot be transported over long distances without significant problems arising. One problem is hydrate formation/wax precipitation that occurs when the untreated well stream cools. Another problem is the strong corrosive effect untreated well flow has on the steel pipelines that are commonly used today.
To remedy these problems, it has previously been proposed to use heatable pipelines. However, the previously known pipelines cannot easily be used underwater and at great depths, where the risk of saltwater intrusion and short-circuiting will be significant.
E.g. is it from NO. design document no. 154535 described a device for heating a liquid, gas or air-carrying line, where the heating takes place using one or more electrically conductive layers on the outside of the wire, e.g. of electrically conductive plastic materials that are electrically insulated from the medium that the cable carries through. at least one electrically insulating layer. However, little precautions have been taken above the surrounding medium, and the line will therefore be unsuitable for underwater use.
US patent document no. 3900047 describes a plastic pipe which can be electrically heated using an electrically conductive strip or film attached to the inside of the plastic pipe. When joining several plastic pipe sections, connectors are used that are inserted into the pipe section ends, and where electrical conductors are arranged on the outside of each connector to connect the electrically conductive strips/films to each other. If you want to thaw a pipeline section, it will be possible to connect power to the connectors on each side of the pipeline section, as the connectors' electrical conductors are freely available for connection. Nor will this concept be applicable for the transport of untreated well flow, as the electrical conductors of the coupling pieces will be poorly protected against the surrounding medium and as a film or strip on the inside of the plastic pipe will quickly be destroyed by the corrosive effect of untreated well flow.
US Patent No. 3971416 describes a pipeline consisting of an inner pipe, a heating device attached to this pipe, then an insulation layer, and at the very end an outer protective jacket. The heating device runs along the entire pipeline, and in case of damage to the insulation layer, e.g. in connection with the laying of the pipeline, the heating device could quickly be short-circuited. In the case of long pipelines, the cross-section of the heating device will also be disproportionately large.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a pipeline of the kind stated in the introduction to claim 1, and where the disadvantages of the previously known pipelines have been eliminated.
The invention is characterized by the fact that the heating wires/cables are embedded in the composite pipe, connected to multiphase current and consist of 3 heating wires/cables that are wound in parallel, the heating device being divided into sections of limited length, and where each section is supplied with power from a separate feed cable that runs along the pipeline .
Oppfinnelsen vil bli nærmere beskrevet i det etterfølgende under henvisning til de medfølgende tegninger hvori: Fig. 1 viser i tverrsnittriss en utførelse av en rørledning ifølge oppfinnelsen, Fig. 2 viser en prinsippiell skisse av en rørledning med spiralvindet varmekabel/tråd tilkoplet en matekabel, Fig. 3 viser i større målestokk tilkobling av en varmetråd/kabel til en matekabel, The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows in cross-section an embodiment of a pipeline according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows a principle sketch of a pipeline with a spirally wound heating cable/wire connected to a feed cable, Fig 3 shows on a larger scale the connection of a heating wire/cable to a feed cable,

Fig. 5 shows an alternative embodiment of a cable joint.
Figure 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a pipeline 10 according to the invention. The pipeline 10 is particularly designed for the transport of particularly corrosive fluid, such as untreated oil and gas (well stream). The shown pipeline 10 comprises an inner composite pipe 11, on top of this a weight coating 12 and at the very end an insulating layer 13. The pipeline 10 also comprises a heating device.
The production of the pipeline 10 takes place in several stages. A first step comprises winding an inner composite tube 11, and can be carried out by conventionally passing dry strips of glass fiber into a bath of vinyl ester and winding them around a cylindrical template. By rotating the cylindrical template at the same time as a feeding device for the fiberglass strips is moved axially along the template, it is possible to build up the composite tube 11 with the desired wall thickness and winding pattern. In the production of the inner composite pipe 11, other known methods can of course be used, e.g. winding of strips that are pre-impregnated with epoxy.
A heating element, e.g. in the form of a heating wire/cable 14 is embedded in the composite pipe 11. The heating element and its assembly will be described in more detail later.
A composite pipe 11 alone will have a relatively high permeability and if the pipe is to be used for the transport of hydrocarbons, it is necessary to lower the permeability in order to prevent excessive loss by diffusion of low molecular weight gases through the pipe wall. The requirement that the pipeline should lie stably on the seabed also requires a pipeline 10 with a relatively high density.
In order to solve both of these tasks, the pipeline 10 is equipped with a weight jacket 12. The weight jacket 12 can be made of vinyl ester with one or more of the mixtures mica (Si08, A^O^, MgO), iron ore (Fe304>), olivine (FeSiO^, Mg2Si04) and barite (BaSO^). Mica is used to reduce the permeability, and iron ore, olivine and barite to increase the density. The weight coating 12 can advantageously be cast directly on the composite pipe 11.
The weight cover can optionally be made up of an additional steel pipe.
The outermost layer is preferably an insulation layer 13 which in a preferred embodiment consists of a mixture of cork and rubber. Such a mixture is known in and of itself and is available in the form of a band that can be wrapped around the inner tube. When the insulation is wound to the desired thickness, the rubber is vulcanized under a predetermined pressure and at a relatively high temperature (of the order of 120°C).
If it is desirable for technical or other reasons, the insulation layer 13 can of course be placed around the composite pipe 11 and with the weight coating 12 at the very end. The insulation layer 13 will, however, be far more elastic than the weight coating 12 and will therefore be able to absorb shocks against the pipeline 10 to a far greater extent without it being damaged.
In order to avoid hydrate formation and precipitation of paraffins when transporting untreated well flow over long distances, it is necessary to use pipelines 10 which can be heated. In the event of a shutdown in pipelines that transport untreated well flow, heating devices will also be necessary.
According to the invention, as mentioned earlier, the pipeline 10 is equipped with heating devices in the form of heating cables or heating wires 14 which are embedded in the composite pipe 11. In order to be able to heat a long pipeline in this way, it is in practice necessary to divide the heating units into sections of limited length , and where each section is supplied with electrical energy via a long supply cable 15.
Følgende formel beskriver forholdet mellom effekt, spenning og resistans: The following formula describes the relationship between power, voltage and resistance:
It is desirable that P should be constant per meters of pipe, and there are also clear limitations on how high voltage can be used. The resistance will be inversely proportional to the area of the cable. If the heating cables and supply cable were to be one and the same cable, this would give a heating cable area which in practice would not be possible to cast into the composite pipe, as the resistance decreases squarely in relation to the voltage drop.
For the energy transfer, three-phase voltage is used and the heating wire/cable 14 will therefore in practice be 3 wires/cables 14 which are wound in parallel and which are all embedded in the composite pipe 11.
One method for mounting the heating wires/cables 14 is to wrap a first part of the inner composite pipe 11, for example 1/3 of the wall thickness, and then wrap the heating wires/cables 14 around and fasten them to this first part. Then the remaining part of the composite pipe 11 is wound. By molding the heating wires/cables 14 into the composite pipe 11, these will be protected both against the influence of the corrosive fluid flowing inside the pipeline 10, and also against seawater that surrounds the pipeline 10. The location of the heating wires/cables 14 also help to secure the heating wires/cables 14 against breakage when the pipeline 10 is bent.
The pipeline 10 is produced in short pipe lengths which are later joined together to form a long pipeline. Each heating cable/wire 14 within each section is spliced together with the heating wire/cable 14 in the adjacent section, and the joint is embedded in a similar manner to the rest of the heating wire/cable 14. The feed line 15 for the supply of electrical energy runs axially along the entire pipeline, and is in a preferred design molded into the weight coating.
The joining of pipeline sections is time-consuming because each joint requires a long solidification and curing time before it can be loaded. In a preferred embodiment, the sections are therefore assembled on land into lengths of 2 to 3 kilometres, which are then towed out and placed on the field.
Figures 2-5 show details of the installation of the heating wires/cables 14 and their connection to the supply cable 15.
As can be seen from Figure 2, the heating cable/wire 14 is spirally wound around part of the composite pipe 11 and connected to the feed cable 15 at certain joint points 16. Each feed wire cable 14 is connected to fuses 17 at the joint points 16.
A constructive embodiment of the joint point 16, but with only one heating wire/cable 14 shown, is indicated purely schematically in fig. 3. As indicated, the heating wires/cables 14 are connected to the supply line 15 in a junction box 18.
The junction box 18 can be constructed in different ways. In fig. 4 shows a preferred embodiment with a so-called oil coupling which consists of a housing 19, to which end pieces 20 can be connected. Cables can be routed through the end pieces 20. Inside the connection housing 19, a frame 21 is arranged where the actual splicing of the cables is carried out. The entire housing is pressurized with oil through a plug 22 after assembly has been carried out, to prevent short-circuiting in the event of any leakage in the coupling piece. In fig. 5 shows an alternative design with a junction box which is made from a heat-shrink tube, and which, after connection, is shrink-wrapped around the cables in a manner known per se.
