Description
Oppfinnelsen vedrører et lagringsdyktig resol-forkondensat. The invention relates to a storable resol precondensate.
It is known that the alkaline condensed phenol-alde-hyde resin solutions (resols) have taken up a wide range of applications due to their superior properties as a binder for wood materials such as e.g. chipboard, fiberboard, plywood, etc., and mineral substances such as abrasives, mold forms and mineral wool. For every area of application, there is a large number of very different resols available, which differ considerably in the type of manufacture and in their composition and thus also in their properties. Admittedly, all resols have one important property in common, the rapid through-hardening. This results from the high reactivity of the resols and leads to the fact that when they are stored, the condensation reaction continues and the resols eventually harden through. Due to this fact, it has hitherto not been possible to produce such resole solutions in advance and to store^ for a longer time.
: -1,1 - 3- The invention therefore relates to a storable resol pre-condensate, which, possibly - after the addition of phenol or another above aldehyde-reactive compound, formaldehyde and/or alkali can be post-condensed to resol, as the pre-condensate is characterized by the fact that it comprises a ;L aqueous-alkaline solution until a viscosity -of 13-25 seconds, measured in 4 ram: DIN beaker at 2G°C and a solids content of 48$, condensed phenol-formaldehyde - condensation product with a phenol-aldehyde molar ratio of 1. : -1, 1 - 3-
For the preparation of the precondensate, phenol and formaldehyde, which are used as 375S--ig solution, are preferably condensed in a molar ratio of 1:1.^0-2.8 with 0.05 - 0.70' mol. NaOH, as 50#^ig aqueous solution. Preferably one drives. the precondensation until the solution has a viscosity of 13-18 seconds (determined in.
4 mm DIN-begre ved 20°C ifølge DIN 53211). 4 mm DIN cups at 20°C according to DIN 53211).
A product whose viscosity is below the lower limit of the specified range is so thin as to be unsuitable for practice. Precondensates of a viscosity within the specified range and a solids content of 48$ have an excellent storage stability, i.e. after 3 months of storage, the viscosity increases only around 5 seconds. If you condense the same mixture to a viscosity of 30 seconds and a solids content of 48$, then after 4 weeks the product already has a viscosity of 45 seconds," after 3 months 60 seconds.
A so-called semi-condensate is known from Swedish patent no. 126,916. It differs from the condensate according to the invention in principle in that, during its production, the condensation reaction has been interrupted by dilution or neutralization. Thereby, the condensation product falls out. Such a product is not further condensable, not even after the addition of phenol and/or formaldehyde and caustic soda, but can only be hardened by the influence of heat and pressure. In addition, according to this Swedish patent, the product is condensed to a viscosity of 20 - 30 cP, preferably. 12" - 16 cP, i.e. lower viscosity than the product according to the invention. Assuming that the viscosity was determined according to Hoppler, the value of 30 cP corresponds to an outflow time of approx. 10 - 12 seconds in a 4 mm DIN cup, viscosities below 30 cP are no longer measurable in 4 mm DIN cups.
The precondensate according to the invention can be prepared in portions. As the greatest heat of reaction in the phenol resin condensation is released by the methylolation of the phenol, i.e. at the start of the reaction, the pre-condensate can be produced particularly advantageously continuously because the removal of heat of reaction can thereby be best controlled. Intensive coolers such as e.g. in DAS No. 1,645,211 referred to spiral heat exchangers.
The major technical advantage of the pre-condensate according to the invention is that it can be stored indefinitely and in a short time, even after long storage, it can be post-condensed according to specification (i.e. as required for further processing or as required by the customer). With this pre-condensate, not only can the necessary specifications be set, however. ■■ is decisivejthese specification-correct resoles also provide the necessary application technical values.
However, the precondensate according to the invention also offers a further very important advantage. Namely, if you want to produce a resin with a different phenol-aldehyde molar ratio than that present in the pre-condensate, all you have to do is add corresponding amounts of -phenol, or aldehyde and any alkaline condensing agent and water and then post-condense the mixture according to specification. However, it has surprisingly been shown that it is indifferent to the quality of the resole whether you start from a pre-condensate that already has the desired phenol-aldehyde molar ratio or whether you add starting substances in order to achieve this.
Thus, with a single storable precondensate, it is possible to produce a number of the most diverse resols.
Oppfinnelsens gjenstand skal forklares nærmere The object of the invention must be explained in more detail
ved hjelp av noen eksempler. with the help of some examples.
Eksempel 1. Example 1.
A pre-condensate containing 2.55 mol of formaldehyde (37%-ig) per 1 mol of phenol is condensed with 0.63 mol of caustic soda (50%-ig) to a viscosity of 15 seconds measured in a 4 mm DIN beaker at 20°C according to DIN 53. 211 and a solids content of hQ%.
A. 100 parts by weight of the newly prepared pre-condensate is post-condensed under the addition of 9 parts by weight of a 50% caustic soda during 1.5 hours at 85°C to a viscosity of
50 sekunder (4 mm DIN-begre ifølge DIN 53211). 50 seconds (4 mm DIN cups according to DIN 53211).
B. Til sammenligning etterkondenseres et allerede B. In comparison, a post-condensation is already done
I. .over three months old pre-condensate of the same composition where the viscosity during storage has been increased from 15 to 17 seconds during 1 hour in the same way. The specific characteristic numbers for these two resins appear in Table I.
As can be seen from the specification values listed under C, the values of the two resins A and B agree well with these.
As a result, however, nothing has yet been said about their technical application properties. Table 2 lists the application technical values as a chipboard binder:
As can be seen from these values, the application technical values produced according to points A and B agree perfectly with the specification values listed under point C, so that it is clear from this that the resols produced according to the invention are in no way inferior to those produced according to to previous procedures.
Eksempel 2. Example 2.
For setting a phenol-formaldehyde molar ratio of a cross-linking agent, which should contain 2.6 mol of formaldehyde and 1.11 mol of sodium hydroxide per mol of phenol, 100 parts by weight of the pre-condensate mentioned in example 1 during the post-condensation at 80-82° C 1.1 parts by weight of formaldehyde (37/&-ig)> 11 parts by weight of caustic soda (50#-ig) and 8 parts by weight of water. The fresh precondensate A requires 2 hours to set a viscosity of 60 seconds (4 mm DIN cup) and the precondensate B stored over 3 months only 1.5 hours.
Table 3 shows the "characteristic figures compared to the specification values (C).
Således ligger i alle tre tilfeller AW 20-fastheten ved 30 2 kp/cm<2> og AW 100-fasthetene ved 19 ± The technical application values of the three resins agree very well. Thus in all three cases the AW 20 strength is at 30 2 kp/cm<2> and the AW 100 strength at 19 ±
p p
1 kp/cm .... 1 kp/cm ....
Eksempel 3- Example 3-
To set the molar ratio of a hard fiber binder which per mol of phenol should contain 1.95 mol of formaldehyde and 0.52 mol of sodium hydroxide, 100 parts by weight of the precondensate mentioned in example 1 have 8.3 parts by weight of phenol, 1.2 parts by weight of caustic soda (50 #-ig) and 28 parts by weight of water during the post-condensation at 90°C. As in examples 1 and 2, here too the post-condensation time of the longer stored pre-condensate is shorter. The characteristic data for the resoles A and B agree here again well with the specification value (C) as shown in table ^.
As already in examples 1 and 2, the application technical values show no differences here as well. Thus, the bending strengths of the hard fiber boards produced with the resoles A and B are at 560 kp/cm, while the specification value should amount to 550 kp/cm<2>.
Eksempel 4. Example 4.
For the production of a phenolic resin modified with urea and melamine for the production of chipboards, which per 1 mol of phenol should contain 0.4 mol of urea, 0.1 mol of melamine, 3.05 mol of formaldehyde and 0.63 mol of sodium hydroxide, dosed to 100 parts by weight of the precondensate mentioned in example 1,
6,8 vektdeler urinstoff, 3,6 vektdeler melamin og 11,6 vektdeler formalin (37/S-ig). 6.8 parts by weight urea, 3.6 parts by weight melamine and 11.6 parts by weight formalin (37/S-ig).
Etter kondensasjonen gjennomføres ved 80°C med friskt (A) og et over tre måneder lagret (B) forkondensat inntil en viskositet på 55 sekunder (4 mm DIN-beger). After the condensation is carried out at 80°C with fresh (A) and a pre-condensate stored for more than three months (B) up to a viscosity of 55 seconds (4 mm DIN cup).
De karakteristiske data for de to resoler A og B stemmer igjen utmerket med spesifikasjonsverdiene for denne reso] slik det fremgår av tabell 5- The post-condensation of the more than three-month-old pre-condensate requires, as in examples 1-3", a reduced reaction time. The characteristic data for the two resols A and B are again in excellent agreement with the specification values for this resol] as can be seen from table 5-
9%. The 19-mm-thick chipboards produced with these resoles are practically identical in terms of their technical application values. Thus, in all cases the bending strengths are at 230 ± 10 kp/cm<2>, the transverse tensile strength V20 at 2.5 ± 0.2 kp/cm and thickness swelling after 2, resp. 24 hours water storage at 3S resp. 9%.

For the binding of mineral substances, as is the case, for example, in the abrasive industry, a universally applicable pre-condensate is developed for the production of such binders on a phenolic resin basis, which differs in its composition from the previous pre-condensates for the production of binders for the wood industry, and per mol of phenol contains 1.55 mol of formaldehyde and 0.07 mol of sodium hydroxide. The batchwise as well as continuously produced precondensate has a solids content of 48$, a viscosity of 14 seconds. (4 mm DIN cup) and a free formaldehyde content of 1.5$. After a storage time of two months, the viscosity increases to 15 seconds, and the free formaldehyde content decreases to 0.7$. To set the molar ratio of a special phenol resol for the grinding wheel industry, which per 1 mol of phenol contains Ij65 mol of formaldehyde and 0.1 mol of sodium hydroxide, 8.1 parts of formalin (37$-ig) and 1.1 parts of caustic soda are dosed to 100 parts by weight of this precondensate (50$-ig).. This reaction mixture, as well as the reaction mixture consisting of a two-month-old pre-condensate, is post-condensed at 35 > resp. 25 minutes at 90°C and then dewatered. Both resols show the data given in table 6 compared to a resin produced according to the usual method.
With regard to the technical application properties of these resins, no differences can be seen, as nothing else was to be expected from the resin data.
