Description
For many packaging purposes, products or items that are fed, grouped, or buffered at arbitrary intervals must be packed in a desired and automatic manner. For sensitive food products it is important that such articles are not damaged in this grouping.
Applicant's U.S. Patent No. 5,314,054 discloses a buffer device that prevents damage to the articles as much as possible. However, this known device has the drawback, among other things, that it requires a lot of space since this device is arranged on a table and the input and the output of the articles are on opposite sides of the table.
The present invention provides a device for buffering or temporarily storing articles, comprising: - supply means for supplying the articles at arbitrary intervals; - an endlessly flexible element which is provided with a number of flights and which is arranged above the supply means; - detection means for detecting the presence of an article at a relevant carrier of the flexible member above the supply means; drive means for driving the endlessly flexible member in such a way that it is moved along with the supply means, and that an article is each time included between the carriers; and - discharge means for discharging the articles from the interstices between the carriers.
The device according to claim 1 requires little space since the endless flexible member is arranged directly above the input means. Furthermore, the removal of the articles can take place both transversely to the feed direction and as an extension thereof. In the device according to the present invention, the contact between product and flexible member remains limited to the drivers, which further limits unexpected damage to the product. Because the endless flexible member is arranged above the supply means (and discharge means), leakage liquid which may come from the articles will cause little pollution; the device can be easily sprayed clean, for example from food residues, making the device versatile for various products, including so-called sanitary products, where a high degree of cleanliness is required.
The present invention further provides a method for buffering or temporarily storing articles, comprising the following steps: - feeding the articles at arbitrary intervals; - engaging from above the articles of flights which are arranged on an endlessly flexible member; - detecting the presence of an article with a relevant carrier; - driving the endlessly flexible member in such a way that an article is always inserted between the carriers; and - the removal of the articles from the spaces between the flights.
The method and device according to the present invention are particularly suitable for packaging delicate products. In particular, this is the case in the preferred embodiment wherein the discharge means comprise an elongated disposed conveyor, the discharge conveyor having the same continuous speed as the products between the flights, which may cause speed changes between product and carriage that may cause damage thereto. avoided. The latter preferred embodiment is particularly suitable for unpackaged delicate food products.
Further advantages, features and details of the present invention will be elucidated with reference to the following description of preferred embodiments of the present invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a schematic side view of a first preferred embodiment of a device according to the present invention; and FIG. 2 is a schematic perspective view of a second preferred embodiment of the buffer device according to the present invention.
A first preferred embodiment 1 (fig. 1) according to the present invention comprises a flat endless conveyor 2 on which articles A1, ...2 ... Ά15 are visible, which are moved at approximately constant speed by the conveyor 2. Above the supply conveyor 2 is a endless belt 3 arranged around respective wheels 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9, wherein for instance near return wheel 6 an (electric) drive motor 10 is arranged for driving the endless belt 3 at approximately the same speed as the speed of the conveyor 2. Carrier 12 is arranged at regular distances on the endless belt 3, which are preferably embodied integrated with said belt 3. The wheels 8, 9 interlock, wheel 8 also being provided with recesses for the carriers. The wheels 8 and 9 can move together along a guide 13 with the aid of a transport device 14 which is driven by a motor 15 near wheel 7 which forms part of the transport device 14. Each time by a detector (not shown), such as an optical element or other sensor, it is detected that an article (in Fig. 1 is Al the next article), reaches the driver at the wheel 9, the wheels 8, 9 are transported over one intermediate distance or pitch distance from the driver, so that the article is exactly between two carriers which are always located above the conveyor 2, the correct pitch distance is conveyed further.
In the exemplary embodiment according to Fig. 1, the articles are subsequently conveyed further with the aid of a discharge conveyor 16, which in this exemplary embodiment is also provided with carriers 17 between which the articles are conveyed at the correct pitch distance. In this exemplary embodiment according to Fig. 1, after the articles have been placed in the interspace between the carriers, it is prevented that considerable forces are still exerted thereon, since the series of articles since they have been brought between the carriers, at an almost constant speed also through the discharge conveyor 16 is conveyed further.
Bij een tweede voorkeursuitvoeringsvorm 20 (fig.In a second preferred embodiment 20 (fig.
Indien noodzakelijk, wordt ten tijde van dit uitdrukken de voortbeweging van de eindloze band 3 (en de transporteur 2) tijdelijk onderbroken.2) of the device of the present invention, parts corresponding to those of FIG. 1 are designated by the same reference numbers. The endless belt 3 is moved in the direction of the arrow C at a speed substantially equal to the conveying speed of the conveyor 2, while the wheels 8, 9 each time over pitch positions D1, D2 and D1. D3 are moved in the direction opposite to the conveying direction of the conveyor 2. An important difference from the embodiment according to fig. 2 concerns the lateral discharge from the preferred embodiment 20 with the aid of a discharge conveyor 21 which extends substantially transversely to the conveyor 2. When articles are present between the carriers over a considerable part of the width of the transverse conveyor 21, the articles are pressed onto the discharge conveyor 21 by means of not shown members, so that these articles are discharged laterally. If necessary, at the time of this expression, the advancement of the endless belt 3 (and the conveyor 2) is temporarily interrupted.
It is noted that it is an important advantage of the present invention that with a device according to the present invention it is possible both to realize lateral discharge of the brought-on articles, as well as discharge in line with the feeding direction, while bringing on of the objects takes place in (at least almost) the same way.
The requested rights are by no means limited to the above described preferred embodiments of the method and device according to the present invention; these requested rights are primarily determined by the following claims.
