Abstract
Description
Title: Method for rusting poultry, as well as shed to be used therewith.
The invention relates to a method for fattening poultry, more particularly broilers, while housing the animals on a carrier bed provided with a litter layer. Such a method is used in broiler farming. This is generally referred to as fattening of broilers according to the 'soil system', which, according to current opinion, is considered animal-friendly, because the litter layer creates, as it were, a 'free-range space'.
Until now, the litter layer has been applied to a dense bottom surface, which is generally formed by the (concrete) floor of the stable space in which the animals are housed.
The invention now aims at improving this known system by creating conditions under which the litter layer can be kept dry. On the one hand, a dry litter layer is considered useful for the welfare, health and production results of the animals, and on the other hand it is considered to have a favorable influence on the environment.
According to the invention, this object is achieved in that the litter layer qp is (semi) continuously aerated by generating an air flow through this carrier bottom from a space below the carrier bottom.
According to the invention, in comparison with the known 'ground system', a floating, air-permeable support base is used.
Tests according to a method thus carried out have shown excellent results. It has been found that by generating a slight overpressure in the space under the carrier bed, the litter can be aerated uniformly without any adverse effect on the animals and can therefore be kept very dry. A special aspect here is that scalding does not prevent stirring and that ammonia hardly develops from the faeces in connection therewith. Ammonia emissions and the associated environmental impact are therefore kept to a minimum.
The method according to the invention also has the advantage that the litter is easy to process and store when it is changed.
The invention further relates to a stable provided with ventilation means which can be used in the method according to the invention.
The stable adapted for use in the method according to the invention is characterized in that an air-permeable support base for a litter layer of wood shavings, short chopped straw or the like is provided at a distance above the stable floor, the space between the stable floor and this supporting bottom being connected to a source of fresh or conditioned air, respectively.
In a preferred embodiment, the actual supporting bottom is formed by a support grid or assembly of grid bars on which a wire network preventing the litter layer from falling is arranged.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing with an exemplary embodiment.
2.Fig. 1 shows a section through a part of the floating floor construction of a stable suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a schematic horizontal section through the stable according to the invention, according to plane II - II in Fig. 3 and Fig. 3 is a schematic vertical section through the stable, according to plane III - III in Fig. 2.
In fig. In Fig. 1, 1 denotes the stable floor, which for instance consists of concrete, while 2 denotes a part of one of the side walls bounding the actual stable space.
At some distance, for example 20 cm, above the concrete floor 1, an air-permeable supporting floor 3 is arranged. In the drawn exemplary embodiment, this supporting floor is built up from sections 4, each of which consists of a slatted frame. These slatted grates 4 are supported on spacers 5, which can for instance be designed as concrete blocks to be placed loosely on the concrete floor 1, but can also form one whole with the grids.
The supporting floor 3 serves to support a litter layer 6, which usually consists of wood shavings, or finely chopped straw or another suitable material. In order to prevent the litter from falling through the interspaces of the slatted grates 4, the supporting floor 3 is covered with a wire net 7, preferably consisting of plastic, with a mesh size suitable for the said function.
The stable according to the invention is further arranged such that the litter layer 6 can be (semi) aerated continuously with a flow of fresh or conditioned air evenly distributed over the entire surface of the litter layer rising from the space 8 and passing through the carrying floor 3. For this purpose, the space 8 between the concrete floor 1 and the supporting floor 3 is continuously supplied with fresh or conditioned air from a space 9 located outside the actual stable space.
In the drawn exemplary embodiment (see fig. 1 and 2) such a space 9 is located on the outside of each of the two opposite stable side walls 10. Fresh air is drawn in from the outside in the spaces 9 and with the aid of a fan 11 and a manifold 12 is blown evenly over the openings in the space 8 arranged in the bottom part of the relevant side wall 10, indicated by 2. This creates a slight overpressure in the space 8, under the influence of which the intended uniform ascending air flow takes place.
The air present above the litter layer is (semi) continuously discharged via ventilation ducts 14 arranged in the roof 13. It will be clear that the vertical air drawn into the spaces 9 can be conditioned according to certain wishes, for instance in terms of temperature, before being blown into the space 8 under the litter bed.
It is clear that many variants of the exemplary embodiments shown in the drawing are possible. In particular, many alternatives are conceivable for the support and implementation of the supporting floor 3.
In the illustrated exemplary embodiments, the two other opposite stable side walls 15 are shown closed. A lockable opening could be provided in one of these side walls 15, or in both, via which the wire net 7, together with the litter layer 6 and the slaughter-ready chickens present thereon, could be pulled out, and subsequently the chicks and the collect and dispose of litter separately.
