Abstract

Cation exchanger membrane contains a fluorocarbon polymer contg. carboxylic acid side-gps. having formula -OCF2COOM (where M is H, NH4, quaternary ammonium or a metal atom). The polymer may also contain sulphonic acid side-gps. having formula -OCF2CF2SO3M. Pref. the cation exchanger membrane contains (a) a fluorocarbon polymer contg. -OCF2COOM side-gps. and opt. -OCF2CF2SO3M side-gps. and (b) a fluorocarbon polymer contg. sulphonic acid cation exchanger gps. -OCF2 CF2SO3M. Polymer (a) is present as >=1 layer having thickness >=100 angstroms on surface (pref.) or inside membrane. Surface density of -OCF2COOM is esp. 20-100 mol. %. Membranes are used as diaphragms in electrolytic cells for electrolysis of aq. alkali halide solns. esp. of NaCl for prepn. of halogen and alkali hydroxide. The presence of -OCF2COOM improves membrane service-life. Current yield of membrane remains stable at >90% after months of service. Membrane may consist of 2 bonded polymer foils. In an example a foil was prepd. from a copolymer of C2F4 and perfluoro (3,6-dioxa-4-Me-7-octene sulphonyl fluoride) by reduction of sulphonyl chloride form.
