Abstract

Ground coffee is stored in a hopper where it is mixed with an inert gas e.g. CO2. Individual portions of coffee are discharged into packets of porous material in presence of CO2 and the sealed packets are carried to an enveloping station. In the enveloping station a U shaped trough of impervious material is moved through the appts. and the packets are placed in the trough. CO2 gas is introduced at the downstream end of the trough just prior to the forming of envelopes by sealing the impervious material round each packet. The appts. packages ground coffee portions in porous packets within impervious envelopers. The CO2 gas flushes out oxygen to prevent deterioration of the coffee during storage.
