Abstract

Oils and fats are sepd from a cleaning fluid consisting of water to which chemicals have been added by means of a filter instllation/settling tank combination. The tank comprises a reservoir whose walls and floor are clad with a filter cloth with a large inlet and a small outlet equipped with a solenoid valve and a time switch. The filter cloth is pref. placed over a grid on the floor of the reservoir and is gripped by means of a retaining frame. On the walls of the reservoir, the cloth is hung over spikes embedded into the wall. The time switch ensures that the water remains in the reservoir for a sufficient period for settlement to occur. The small outlet minimises the discharge flow velocity so that the settled material is not disturbed. The settlement of heavier sediment onto the filter cloth improves the effectiveness of the filter. If the reservoir is to be coupled to a washing machine, the compartment of the machine contg. the washing fluid is coupled to the reservoir inlet via an isolating valve and the reservoir is pref. sized so that, when the communicating valve is opened, the vol of fluid flowing out of the washing machine to establish a common level between the machine and the reservoir is equal to the vol of the reservoir itself. The sepn. unit is partic useful for garage installations where a conventional separator would be inadequate.
