Abstract
In the prodn. of ethylene, CO and H2 are first reacted catalytically such that >75 mol.% of the H2 originally present is converted. At least the gaseous part of the reaction prod. is then pyrolysed at 6 bar to give a prod. contg. ethylene. The mixt. of CO + H2 used is prepd. e.g. by high temp. steam gassification of coal. The mixt. of CO + H2 is reacted catalytically using a catalyst contg. Co or Fe, made by impregnation. The reaction is carried out e.g. at 200-350 degrees C and 10-70 bar using a space rate of 500-5000, pref. 500-2500 Nl gas/l. catalyst/hr. The gaseous part and opt. (part of) the liq. reaction prods. from the reaction are then used as feed to the pyrolysis reactor. The pyrolysis is carried out e.g. at 600-900 degrees C and 0.1-5 bar, using a residence time of 5 secs. The liq. part of the reaction prods. from the first part of the reaction may also be subjected to aromatising conditions in contact with crystalline alumino-silicate zeolite type ZSM-5 or a crystalline iron silicate to produce benzene. The heavy liq. fraction from the first stage of the process may also be used as feed to a thermal cracking unit in the prodn. of unbranched olefins. Process gives high yields of ethylene which is a useful raw material e.g. for the prodn. of polyethylene. The process allows ethylene to be made using the steam gassification of coal as the source of feed stream.
