Abstract

Sections of tube are welded together by means of a welding machine comprising three mobile components mounted on rails which move against prepositioned stops mounted on the carriage bed. The mobile components are a welding head with an electrode mounted on an extended horizontal arm which moves into the end section of pipe to execute a butt weld from with the tube wall, a clamping carriage for holding the already welded sections of pipe and a clamping carriage for holding the new section. During each weld, the butt joint is clamped in a retaining sleeve. The bed of the welding unit can be as long as is required to carry the total welded length of pipe. The machine is used for welding sections of pipe together in unlimited lengths in a continuous process. It is partic. useful when the weld faces are to be a certain distance apart.
