Abstract

A polyvinyl halide with small granule size is prepd. by bulk polymerisation in two stages. A vinyl halide, opt. mixed with an ethylenically unsatd. comonomer, is polymerised to 3-20 wt. % conversion, with high speed stirring, at 30-70 degrees C, in the presence of an additive which is (in amt. w.r.t. monomer) (a) 0.001-5 wt.% fine, inert (in)organic material, solid at the temp. of reaction, and insol. in the monomer, with ave. granule size 0.001-50 mu; (b) 0.01-5 wt. % surfactant; (c) a mixt. of (a) and (b); or (d) 0.05-4 wt. % polyolefin. The reaction mixt. is stirred at low speed until 30-95 wt. % conversion to polymer is reached. A monomer supplement contg. a vinyl halide, a comonomer, or a mixt. of such monomers is added and polymerised to form non-porous polymeric particles by raising the temp. 10-50 degrees C after conversion of 30-80 wt.% of the reaction mixt. into polymer, from 30-70 degrees C to 60-80 degrees C. These (co)polymers, with small granule size, high apparent density, and low absorption of plasticiser, are used in plastisols, and to make films, and on textiles materials. The copolymers with high impact resistance are used to make moulded materials. Pref. (a) is silica and (b) is a prod. of ethoxylation of octylphenol.
