Abstract

Fuel cell for a gaseous fuel and a gaseous oxidant with an alkaline electrolyte has a cathode with a porous electrically conductive layer with an anion exchange membrane connected directly to the cathode on the liq. side. The same method of construction may also be applied to the anode. Pref. the porous electrically conductive layer and the ion exchange layer are bonded together and are based on a common binder which is pref. a polymeric material such as polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC or (esp.) PTFE. The presence of the ion exchange membrane allows the fuel cell to be run on air contg. CO2, which causes the formation of carbonate ion in the electrolyte, which has previously caused a deterioration in the electrochemical processes in the cell. With the ion exchange membrane in position, the operation of the cell is not interrupted by the presence of carbonate ion in the electrolyte, so that CO2 need not be washed out of the air used to run the cell.
