Abstract

The catheter measures the level of a fluid, partic. blood in a natural vessel, eg in a wound during open-heart surgery. It has a oblong body (1) with measuring devices (3) at the end which is inserted in the vessel, while at the other there are connections (5) to measuring gauges etc. The devices can be inductive or capacitive. The body can have a hollow coil insulated from the blood and immersed in it, while a capacitor is connected in parallel with the coil. The coil is connected to an alternating-current source, the frequency of whose voltage is equal to the resonance frequency of the LC-circuit thus formed. The impedance of this LC-circuit at this frequency is measured.
