Abstract

A contact lens with an oxygen transmission corresp. at least to an atmos. oxygen equiv. of 5% comprises a polymeric hydrogel contg. >=30 wt. %, pref. 50-85 wt. % water, based on total wt. of hydrogen, the molecular structure of the hydrogel contg. ionic gps. and the hydrogel being the hydrated polymer obtd. from a monomer mixt. contg. a large amt. of a vinyl(idene) monomer, and smaller amts. of an unsatd. anhydride or acid and a crosslinking agent. The lens is soft, hydrophilic, can be worn for long periods without causing anoxy of the underlying correa, undergoes minimum displacement during blinking, has high oxygen permeability and can be sterilised in boiling water without causing deterioration of the polymer.
