Abstract

A new compsn. for determining urea level in biological fluids comprises urease, buffers and an indicator dye, the buffers being mixed and comprising >=1 buffer which increases in pH as the temp. increases and >=1 other buffer which decreases in pH with the temp. increase. The compsn. may also contain stabilisers. The urea level in urea-contg. fluids is determined by adding the above compsn. and measuring the absorbence of the soln. just after the urease has catalysed the total conversion of urea to ammonia. The method of determining urea is simpler and faster to perform than the previously known urease methods, it does not require elevated temps. for reaction, utilises harmless chemicals and is quantitative.
