Abstract

Cpds. where R = H or 1-6C alkyl (straight or branched chain) and R1 = H or CH3. As pesticides, partic. as gastropodicides, for killing snails which are the intermediate hosts for parasitic trematodes or flukes, used as dusts, emulsions or solns., pref. with anionic or non-ionic surfactants, opt. with other pesticides. One mole of 2-chloro-4-cyano-aniline is reacted with one mole of the appropriate 5-chloro-salicylic acid, in the presence of 0.33-1.0 mole PCl3 and an inert organic liquid, at a suitable temp. The crude product is usually satisfactory as a pesticide, but may be purified by solvent extraction etc. if required.
