Abstract
A water softener has a container for ion exchange medium, like cationic resin or zeolite. A container for regenerating medium like salt is connected to it. A pipe runs from the regeneration container to near the bottom of the exchange container. There are outlets for softened water and for spent regeneration medium. These connect above a sieve plate mounted near the top of the exchange container. The feed for hard water connects to the regeneration container. No valve is needed on the feed to initiate the regeneration. This reduces the frequency maintainance.
