Abstract

4-Hydroxypyrazole 3,4-d pyrimidine (allopyrinol) (I) is prepd. by reacting ethoxymethylenecyanoethyl acetate (II) with hydrazine at is not >20 degrees C. to give hydrazinomethylenecyanoethyl acetate (III) which is isolated and reacted with formamide. The process gives a pure prod. in high yield, as (III) does not dissolve in organic solvents and is easily isolated.
