Abstract

The packing for making a joint between the two surfaces of a joint fitting for the pipes of liquid sodium circuit in a heat exchanger, consists of two sealing rings which have different dimensions in the direction in which the joint is pulled up. Thus, when the joint is made, the ring which is highest, having undergone a permanent (plastic) deformation, acquires resilience to such a degree that, not only during normal running conditions, but also, when severe, abruptly changing mechanical and thermal loads are imposed, leakproof contact is maintained with the jointing surfaces, which are held at a fixed distance apart by the shorter spacer ring. The difference in height between the two rings is such that the highest ring is only elastically deformed, or it may be deformed to such an extent that it retains only 5-30% spring-back capacity relatively to the original difference in height. At the same time, the shorter ring is thicker in cross section than the taller thin ring, and when clamped, the latter takes up a barrel shape. completely effective in a liquid sodium circuit and also applicable successfully in other fields.
