Abstract

I.C. Engine or gear box failure is predicted by monitoring the presence of metal particles in the lubricating oil system. The particle size may vary between a few microns or e.g. 20 millimicrons. Samples of the lubricating oil are separated in at least three different membrane devices through which the oil is filtered. The filtrate is analysed for particle size below 0.3 microns. A graphic device plots the particle sizes e.g. less than 0.3 microns, 0.3-1.2 microns and particles sizes above 1.2 microns.
