Abstract
Continuous measurement of carbon dioxide concentration is made. When the measurements indicate a predetermined concentration has been exceeded an alarm is given. The alarm is also given when the gas concentration rate of change exceeds a predetermined value. The alarm system is actuated by sensitive detection which respond when gas concentration exceeds the predetermined value, and when the rate of change of gas concentration exceeds a predetermined value. The method works on the principle that the carbon dioxide gas concentration in the mine atmosphere increases very rapidly during the initial stages of a fire.
