Abstract

Ash-free detergent dispersant compsn. consists mainly of a reaction prod. (I) contg. ester, amide and imide bonds, which is prepd. by a 2-step reaction in which (I) (A) an alkenyl-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, in which alkenyl gp. contains >40C and has mol.wt. 600-1500, is reacted with (B) an alkanolamine having general formula HN(R'OH)2 (where R1 is 2-10C alkylene) at a mole ratio (A):(B) 1:0.05 to 1:0.65 (1:0.1 to 0.65), to form an intermediate, and (2) reacting the intermediate with (C) an amine having general formula (a) H2N(R11NH)nH, (b) HN N(R''NH)nH or (c) O N (R''NH2)H2 (where R'' is 1-10C alkylene and n is integer 1 to 6) at a mol. ratio (alkenyl dicarboxylic acid or anhydride gp. of intermediate) :(C) 1:0.1 to 1:0.5. The compsn. is pref. used in hydrocarbon oil compsns. contg. (I) in 0.1-30 (1-10) wt.% concn. esp. lubricants for internal combustion engines. (I) has good dispersant properties and good high temp. stability.
