Abstract
Either the worm shaft (1) or the worm wheel (2) or both may be in modular cast iron with a perlitic matrix. The material may have a tensile strength of 80 kg /mm2 and maximum permissible unit pressure of 160 kg/mm2. The components being milled only, to remove the skin and not ground and hardened. A three months continuous running period divulged minimal wear on all moving parts. Average box temperature was 32 deg.c against 50 deg.c for a box in which the wormshaft was of chrome nickel steel and the worm steel of bronze.
