Abstract

Continuous mass transfer processes, such as absorption extraction, gas scrubbing, direct heat exchange etc., are carried out by passing lighter and heavier phases up through several contactive stages of a column; the phases at all times progress in cocurrent flow relationship to each other; each stage splits off a heavier-phase enriched reflux which is returned to the entry throat of the stage below. There is a great difference in relative speeds of the two phases at the entry throat to each contacting stage, so mass transfer is at least as efficient as for countercurrent flow conditions, and the new column is smaller for a given duty.
