Abstract

Aqueous formaldehyde solns. with low methanol content are made by distilling methanol-contg. aqs. HCHO solns. in the pres. of alkanol(s) with >7C and dialkyl ether(s) with >7C in each alkyl gp. The crude HCHO solns. are made in the usual way by oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol using Ag or metal oxide catalysts. After dissolving the prods. in water, a prod. is obt. contg. 28-65% HCHO and 1-20 wt.% methanol. These solns. are now distilled in a suitable column, when methanol is obt. as top product and a low-methanol formaldehyde soln. as bottom product. The alkanol/dialkyl ether mixture (e.g. a thick oil solvent made by distillation of fatty alcohols made by the oxo process) is added continuously or discontinuously to the column to prevent solidification of the product in the column, with consequent rise in pressure in the column and reduction of output.
