Abstract

In the chlorination of benzene to monochlorobenzene, using an Fe catalyst, the benzene contains not 20, e.g. 200, ppm. water to increase the rate of reaction. In a continuous process, optimum reaction conditions can be maintained over long periods. The max rate of reaction is achieved when the ratio of H2O:FeCl3 in the soln. is =1 (FeCl3 forms during the reaction).
