Abstract
The lactams concerned, e.g. caprolactam, are reacted with alkali metal hydroxides or with lower aliphatic alkoxides either in the molten state or in solution, the water on the aliphatic alcohol being simultaneously removed by means of molecular sieves. As molecular sieves synthetic zeolite may be used which have an effective pore diameter of 3A-6 angstroms.
